Good nutrition can help enhance athletic performance. An active lifestyle and exercise routine, along with eating well, is the best way to stay healthy. Eating a good diet can help provide the energy you need to finish a race, or just enjoy a casual sport or activity.
As physical therapists it is our job to consider all potential contributors to a patient’s recovery. While we do a great job of accounting for the physical components of rehabilitation, such as strength, flexibility and prior level of function, we often overlook the importance of a less obvious component: nutrition. Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the healing process and can either enhance or hinder a patient’s recovery from musculoskeletal injury. While it is not in our scope of practice to design nutritional plans, we should possess a baseline knowledge of nutritional influences in musculoskeletal healing. Physical therapists have arguably more contact with patients than any other healthcare provider throughout the recovery process. We are therefore in a great place to remind our patients of the importance of adequate nutrition.

What happens during the massage?
Before your deep tissue massage, your massage therapist will want to know about your problem areas. A deep tissue massage can involve your entire body or just one area.
Once ready, you’ll be asked to lie on your back or stomach, under a sheet. Your level of undress is based on your comfort, but the area being worked on will need to be exposed.
The massage therapist will warm up your muscles using a lighter touch. Once you’re warmed up, they’ll start working on your problem areas. They’ll use deep kneading and stroking with varying amounts of intense pressure.
