NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 2019

Imagine a man negotiating a crushingly repressive governing machine, doing it from the inside, and sweeping to power. Then imagine him immediately throwing the prison doors open to free thousands of political prisoners and journalists, welcoming back exiles, allowing banned opposition figures to run for office, and quickly reaching a peace deal with a neighboring country after decades of war.

That man is Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, 43.

The deeply sad and disheartening news of the demise of Hon. Kenneth Odhiambo Okoth hit me very hard, so hard that it has taken me 24hours to compose myself enough to say anything.

When Ken first ran for MP Kibra Constituency in 2013, I was also on the ballot in my home Naivasha Constituency. Among the things I was looking forward to in that election was to get to work with Ken as a fellow youthful legislator and serve our people with excellence and distinction.

When the people of Kibra made the great choice in electing Ken, I trusted that he would at least prove them right, but he went beyond proving them right, he quickly became a voice of reason and sober politics and received accolades for his prudent management of CDF.

Ken was very committed to legislative work and he never shied away from his convictions on the altar of political-correctness, his discourse on the legalization of ma*****na for medical and responsible recreational use is one such shining example of his bold honesty.

While I am disappointed that I never got the noble previlage to work with Ken in parliament, I am so proud of the noble work he was able to accomplish in seven short years for his people of Kibra, Kenya and the world at large.

Ken will forever remain an inspiration to us who believe in the power of pure uncorrupted consent and what it can achieve for humanity.
