When things go wrong!!!
Masinga Dam at full capacity of 1.56 billion cubic metres spills over, crashes down the spillway and back to Tana river.
Masinga is the main reservoir in the seven forks cascade dams along Tana river in Central Kenya. It covers 120km and generates 40MW of hydroelectric power.
Masinga Dam is fed by rivers from the windward side of Nyandarua mountain. Rivers Chania (Nyeri), Gura, Mathioya join up with Sagana river (from S.West Mt. Kenya) which forms Tana river that is dammed at Masinga.
Maragua and Chania rivers (Thika) flow directly into Masinga Dam.
Masinga acts as a reservoir that holds water to be released to the other dams downstream in the cascade system. Rivers from Mt. Kenya South and East join Tana post-Masinga and the river is dammed repeatedly to maximize on power production.
Beyond Masinga, Tana is dammed at Kamburu Dam (94 MW) before flowing into Gitaru Dam (largest power producing Dam in Kenya with capacity of 225 MW). From Gitaru Tana flows to Kindaruma Dam (72 MW) and further to Kiambere Dam (168 MW).
