Setting up a Sacco in Kenya Made Easy
This is as easy as ABC. But what is a Sacco? A Sacco is a Savings and Credit Co-Operative. A proven means to achieve personal financial planning and grow your family by meeting their needs as they arise;be they education, housing, medical,social welfare etc. It gives you financial freedom by saving little by little over time and being able to access affordable loans.
The first step is to establish the objectives for which you want to set up a Sacco. This means being able to put your ideas on paper. This process helps evaluate the journey and be able to put in place strategies to deal with unforeseen circumstances. Step I - Setting Up a Sacco in Kenya - Write a letter
The next step is to write a letter to the Commissioner of co-operatives through the area DCO. This letter is to help open a file and assist you in the process. The letter should be accompanied with a signed list of potential members. The DCO will then visit the members to verify all details and set in motion the registration process. He/She will also provide a list of any other required documents for the process.
Step II - Conduct Name Search and Reservation
Here you come up with three names, starting with your most preferred name. Write a letter to the Registrar of Societies ,who checks and confirms availability or otherwise of the preferred name(s). This is reserved for thirty (30) days.
Step III - Sacco Certificate of Registration
Once the above is clear, the commissioner of co-operatives will issue a registration certificate. You will then be required to convene a general meeting to elect officials and start operations.
