A Magical sunset Tour of Hells Kitchen in Malindi.

We had a second magical Sunset. This one at Hells Kitchen in Marafa. Hells Kitchen is a beautiful depression feature about 1 hour 10 minutes from Malindi town in Marafa. So called because it gets quite hot during the day, north of 40 Celcius. The landscape is this Canyon like resulting from years of erosion exposing the tri coloured earth, with hues of Red from Iron, Green-shh from sulphates and White from calcium deposits. While the name sounds scary or violent even, this is one of the most beautiful naturally occuring places you will come across.

Hells kitchen is a community project with entrance fees going directly to the community of Marafa. Most of them are from the Giriama community. They have organized themselves with most young men very adept at giving a good guided tours. Complete with Geological as well as forklore explanations of the place. Most of the guides speak Swahili, English and Spanish.

The best time to visit Hells Kitchen are morning hours before the infamous high temperatures of the midday sun and my preferred times of evening. From Malindi town it will take you about 1 hour on a perfect tarmac road. Starting your journey from your Malindi Hotel or town, you will need to leave at 4 PM. You will get there at around 5PM allow you about 1 hour of a guided tour with opportunity for photos inside the canyons and as well as at the top before the icing on the cake, the beautiful sunsets

Nairobi life is always rushed, stressful and with little time to unwind 😮‍💨😩. It then comes as no surprise that when we get sometime away; say by the beach; we want to just relax with some mock/cocktails 🍹by the beach and doze off the afternoons. While this feels so good, there are some activities and experiences that will be more than worth your while💃.

In Watamu one of those is LICHTHAUS by Temple point ⚓. It is a renowned restaurant famous for its breathtaking sunset views over Mida Creek 🏖️.
✨The allure of this restaurant is the intimate floor sitting experience that offers a unique dining experience with hammocks suspended over the water, allowing guests to relax and savor the picturesque scenery 📸.
The menu features a variety of skewers, including options like Garlic Beef 🍖, Honey Glazed Halloumi 🍯, and Pineapple Octopus 🐙, accompanied by fresh salads and sides 🥗.
Lichthaus is open daily from 12 PM to 10 PM, making it an ideal spot for both lunch and dinner. We did not know how popular as a destination is but we were still lucky to get access to an over water hammock for 2, just before sunset 🌅. Sipping our drink, watching the sun set over the creek, we grinned like 2 teenagers left alone together 🫂.
🎟️ Entry here is chargeable at a minimum of KES 1000 per person which is claimable when making food orders. We remained in the hammock for the duration of the sunset and then some more 🤩.
🕺An Enthusiastic DJ played a blend of Afro and house music and we were in no hurry to leave this enchantment 🎶.

To Watamu & Malindi by Train, car and back to Nairobi by air.

Good morning Family, this week has been a good break for Madam Director and I brought by Tuzuru Wapi by Phine Safaris.
We decided to have our November break in Watamu and Malindi. We also wanted to have a bit of a feel of the drive between Mombasa and Malindi before flying back to Nairobi on Fly Jambojet at the end of the 5 Days. We took the 10PM night Train to Mombasa, then drove to Watamu for 2 a nights stay before getting to Malindi for another 2 nights. WE had some stop overs on the way to see some partner hotels, we shall share about them later.

For now, back to the trip on the train, lately you have heard about the Premium class on the Niarobi Mombasa train. It is this luxe experience with lie flat bed seats and gourmet meals. This is the ticket I was hoping to get, I looked forward to this experience so we could share it with you. And so for a whole week before the trip I looked forward to this experience. 2 Days before the trip however Madam Director informed me she tried so hard to book the premium tickets but she was unable to justify the price in her head…(Ni the economy) so she had booked the 1st class train tickets ☹instead. So for me and the Luxe experience, let’s say it was a dream deferred. I get a lot of difficulty sleeping and I knew it was going to be a long 6 hours on the train. I did manage to get 1 or 2 hours of interrupted sleep. Hardly enough for someone planning on making a 3 hour drive afterwards.

On Arrival at the Miritini station, we met our driver from our coast partners that handed us the vehicle we would use to drive up from Mombasa to Malindi. It was about 4 am and Mombasa being generally a much more laid back city compared to Nairobi, we struggled to find an open place where we could buy coffee and so we decided to drive all the way to Mtwapa, the part of Mombasa you are guaranteed to find people awake clubbing this early. On getting to Mtwapa we thought a good bet for coffee would be the Naivas or Quickmatt which were open but were not selling coffee. By now fatigue was getting the better of us and we just decided to sit in the car and wait for daybreak which at 5:30AM was maybe only 30 minutes away. And so at the quickmatt parking, as soon as I reclined the seat, I was gone, totally out!

THE next time I came around, I was woken up by the loud touting and honking of matatus. The sun was out already at 6:40am and thank God we were in a heavily tinted car so all this went around us with no one knowing the car was occupied. Disappointed we could not get coffee other than that that sold by the road side vendors (somehow it is like all of them are from Burundi and Madam director can never touch those) we decided to start our drive towards Malindi and hoped we came across a decent coffee house along the way, sooner rather than later I hoped.

The drive and the road are generally good with exception to patches where there are diversions due to the ongoing road dualling works. On completion the drive will be faster and more enjoyable. All this time madam director missed because she was sleeping as I did the driving. Thankfully we soon came up to Vipingo Market & Beyond, a nice and quaint mall. Here I saw a coffee house, pharmacy and a supermarket. A nice stop on your journey. It was 7am and with the exception of the coffee house where they had pastries from the previous day, every other establishment did not open until 8am or 8:30am. Again, I got out of the car and left madam director sleeping, sat outside the coffee shop and got the best coffee of my life accompanied by a Danish apple pie with cheese. I enjoyed my coffee in solitary, took in the views and observed people get in for work, open their stores and wait for clients like myself. I was happy to be on holiday. At about 8:20am Jane woke up and finally joined me, fresh and alert. Ready for the journey.
