Have you ever been travelling by a car, boat, train or plane and felt as we like to call it,'roho imechafuka'?
Well, that feeling is motion sickness.
1 in 3 people get motion sickness at some point in their lives.
This occurs when your brain receives conflicting information from the motion-sensing parts of your body (eyes, ears, muscles and joints) and doesn't know whether you are stationary or moving.
As a result of your brain's confused reaction, you feel sick.
Just to give an example, assume your travelling by car. Your eyes see trees passing by and register movement. Your inner ears sense movement but your joints and muscles sense that your body is sitting still which then leads to the brain sensing a disconnect among these messages.
Common symptoms of motion sickness include:
1. Nausea
2. Vomiting
3. Dizziness
4. Fatigue
5. Headache
6. Rapid breathing or gulping for air.
To avoid motion sickness, we recommend antihistamines and anti-nausea drugs before travel which you can find in all our branches.
Other than the medication, one should:
A. Avoid heavy meals and greasy, spicy or acidic foods before travel.
B. Keep the windows open to let in fresh air.
C. Distant gazes. Avoid constantly looking att your phone or any other devices at close vicinity.
D. Lie back and close your eyes.
In a car, sit at the front passenger seat.
In a boat, sit in the middle.
In a bus or matatu, sit at a window seat
In a plane, sit at the wing section.
At Naivagil, all your concerns are catered to. We offer professional advice and effective treatment for all your ailments.
Visit any of our branches today to receive quality medical services.
Your health is always our pride.
Peptic ulcers commonly referred to simply as ulcers are sores that develop on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach or duodenum.
The sores are formed when gastric acid damages the lining of the digestive tract.
Most people experience no symptoms. They find out while testing for other conditions such as:
A. Dull burning pain in the stomach area
B. Indigestion / heartburn
C. Nausea and vomiting
D. Change in stool colour to a dark brown
E. Unexplained weight loss.
Peptic ulcers are commonly caused by a bacterial infection known as helicobacter pylori (h.pylori).
Long term use of medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin can cause ulcers. This is because they interrupt the stomach's ability to protect itself from acids.
Stress does NOT cause ulcers and neither do spicy foods. The two can make it worse but they do not bring about ulcers.
Ulcers can be treated and contained. It is important to have them identified early to avoid progression into severity.
At Naivagil, you are assured of effective treatment for we understand the condition greatly. We offer advice on managing the ulcers in the long run and constant support.
You can visit any of our branches to consult professionals on the same

Many of us have heard of Diabetes but what does it really mean when we deem someone diabetic?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin it produces.
The earliest symptoms of diabetes include:
a. excessive urination.
b. increased thirst.
c. excess hunger.
d. fatigue.
e. blurred vision.
Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the world and a major reason for this is that most people are unaware that they are diabetic and those who are aware do not take the right measures to contain the illness.
Of the three types of diabetes, type 2 diabetes (caused by ineffective use of insulin in the body) is the most common with 2 in every 3 diabetic patients having the same.
Type 1 diabetes(results from deficient insulin production) is most common in young people.
Living with diabetes does not have to entail very complicated meal planning. All one is required to do is to avoid excess sugar, unhealthy fats, sodium and cholesterol.
Moderate regular exercise and weight loss or control go a long way to help minimize diabetes symptoms.
The month of November helps bring awareness to Diabetes worldwide.
At Naivagil, we stand with all those who are diabetic and are working to assist in identifying and treating those with the disease. You are all part of our family.
We shall be carrying out free blood sugar tests in all our branches from Tuesday the 23rd of November to Wednesday the 24th of November. All are welcome.

DEPRESSION is a mood disorder that can be described as feelings of sadness, loss or anger that interfere with a person's everyday activities. More than 264 million people are affected. A number of factors can cause depression such as hormones, stress & trauma, brain chemistry imbalances and more. Dealing with depression is not a walk in the park for most people. It is more than ordinary sadness as it easily detriments ones motivation and productivity. Depression can also worsen existing conditions eg. Asthma, arthritis, cancer and diabetes. It is of the most importance that people suffering from this condition visit a psychiatrist or therapist for effective treatment.
If your loved one is depressed, love them unconditionally. Constantly give them hope that it gets better. Do not judge or blame them for being depressed. Someone depressed is not lazy but ill. Keep that in mind. It's not personal when they pull away, give them some space and continue supporting them. Walk with them in their recovery journey. Ask them to seek help and be present for them.
To those suffering from depression, listen to the people that love you and want the best for you. You are worth living even when you don't believe it. Seek out the memories depression takes away and project them into the future. Be brave. Be strong.

The month of May is a time to raise awareness to those living with mental or behavioral health issues to help reduce the stigma so many experience. Throughout the year,we will help you better understand some common mental disorders and what they entail. Mental health needs more sunlight, more candor and more unashamed conversation. It is a process, not a destination. It is about how you drive not where you are going. Let's embark on this journey together. Your health is our pride.
-Allergies have been deemed to be one of the leading cause of chronic illness.
-An allergy is a condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance.
-This can affect people of all sexes and age groups.
-The most common allergic response is allergic rhinitis (hay fever) which causes itchy nose, eyes and roof of the mouth, watery eyes, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose and swelling around eyes.
-This occurs when exposed to allergens in the air such as pollen, spores, dust mites and animal skin, urine as well as saliva.
-If at all you have this condition, the best diagnosis is avoidance of or decreased exposure to the above allergens.
-In the case of contact with the allergens, it is important to get the appropriate medication for the same.

Last month was the cancer awareness month. A lot of us have very little information on the disease hence here are some facts on the same:
1. Cancer's figure among the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 9.6 million deaths in 2018.
2. Lung, colorectal, stomach, liver and breast cancers cause the most cancer deaths each year.
3. The most frequent types of cancer differ between men and women.
4. About one-third of cancer deaths are due to the five leading behavioral and dietary risks: high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, physical inactivity, to***co use, alcohol use and are therefore preventable.
5. Cancer causing infections such as HBV/HCV and HPV are responsible for up to 25% of cancer cases in low- and middle-income countries.
6. To***co use is the most important risk factor for cancer causing over 20% of global cancer deaths.
7. Cancer arises from the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries. The change may be started by external agents and inherited genetic factors.
8. More than 60% of world’s total new annual cases occur in Africa, Asia and Central and South America. These regions account for 70% of the world’s cancer deaths.
Last week, the world marked its contraceptive day. Here is a brief summary in regards to contraception
1. Contraception gives control over the number of children one gets, when and how they want it.
2. Contraception is necessary for married couples, sexually active individuals, breastfeeding mothers and women of child-bearing age.
3.It prevents unplanned/ unwanted pregnancies for both married and singles hence reducing the rate of illegal abortion.
4. Contraceptives DO NOT prevent HIV/AIDS infection as well as any other infections. Only pregnancy.
5. All in all, it is important for anyone planning on taking up contraception to consult the appropriate specialist to determine which method of contraception is the best for them.
It is often assumed that High Blood Pressure is a condition specially prone to the elderly. Contrary to this popular belief, young people can very well have the condition. It is therefore important to regularly check on your blood pressure levels every so often. Here is a chart to help monitor the same.
Then again, what is the appropriate way to wear a mask?
Here are a few guidelines to the same.
1. Before touching the mask, clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or sanitize your hands with an alcohol-based sanitizer.
2. Often times depending on your mask, the top side is where the metal piece is located and the inside is the white part.
3.Fit the mask to your face, tip the metal piece to take the shape of your nose and ensure the mask covers your mouth as well as your chin.
4. DO NOT touch the front of the mask. When intending to remove the same, grab the elastics from behind your ears, dispose of the mask and thoroughly clean your hands.
Let's keep staying safe.
Ever wondered why we ought to wear masks?
The reason behind this which has slowly become the new normal is to avoid spread of any respiratory droplets from one indvidual to another through coughing, sneezing or casual talks.
