NDU-K was established under Section 24 of the Universities Education Act, 2012 on 27 May 2021.

The University offers specialized certificates, diplomas and degrees in areas related to Defence and security, as well as other dimensions of security.

NDU-K STAFF TRAINING ON RISK MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT OF RISK REGISTER KICKS OFF

National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Major General William Shume,has urged University Staff to embrace the internal audit process as a means to strengthening and enhancing the quality of education and services provided by NDU-K.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of a one-week training on Risk Management and development of Risk Register for the NDU-K staff at the University Seat in Lanet, Nakuru County, the DVC reaffirmed the University's unwavering commitment to adopting the internal audit process saying it plays a critical role in bolstering the institution's ability to create, protect, and sustain value by providing the University Management Board and University Council with independent objective assurance, insight and foresight.

The DVC reiterated that, NDU-K has put in place various mechanisms for updating Internal audit documents and establishing comprehensive Risk Management Framework for enhancing internal controls and management risk so as to conform with the Public Finance Regulation.

He at the same time noted that NDU-K has fully established Public Finance Management Standing Committee in order to enhance effective and efficient financial management and to obtain total compliance and achievement of the zero Fault Audit Status.

He added, “As we strive for excellence in teaching, research, and community service, the internal audit functions stand as a pillar in our commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.”

The training which is facilitated by a team from Ministry of Defence and the National Treasury is tailored towards equipping the University staff, Risk Management Steering Committee and risk champions with adequate skills and knowledge for effective mitigation and management of risks in the University.

The event was attended by, among others,DVC Finance & Administration Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a, Major General (Rtd) Patrick Amogola, Directors, Heads of Departments, Senior Officers, Faculty and staff of the University.

NDU-K SIGNS AN MOU WITH MASINDE MULIRO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai on 20 August 2024 presided over the signing of a memorandum of understanding ( MOU) with Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology (MMUST), at the University Seat in Lanet.

The MOU will enable the two institutions to conduct joint academic and research, enhance development, preparation, design and publication of relevant academic journals and books as well as easily access faculty and students facilities library resources within the laid down rules of the parties, among others.

Speaking during the signing of the MOU, Lt Gen Mutai underscored the importance of cooperation and partnership, reiterating that the MOU signing will usher in a golden opportunity to realize and implement common aspirations.

The VC further encouraged the respective university leadership to embark on full implementation of the signed MOU emphasizing on the mutual benefits that the institutions stand to gain based on the unique niche that they occupy.

MMUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo, said partnership will enable the two institutions to leverage emerging technologies as an enabler of delivering educational content and impart knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will have far-reaching changes in the education sphere, useful in contemporary work environments.

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) today signed a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), at the University Seat in Lanet. The MOU encompasses, among other things, collaborating on initiatives aimed towards the promotion of public knowledge, awareness and understanding of national security, policy and administration.

Speaking during the signing of the MOU NDU-K Vice-Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai reiterated University’s commitment to proffering practical solutions to contemporary and future security challenges through sharpening skills in strategic and analytical thinking as well as conducting research.

On his part, CUEA VC, Very Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua, expressed the institution’s gratitude for the unwavering support the NDU-K has shown during the process of preliminary preparations towards the signing of the MOU.

He stated that the partnership will enhance CUEA’s core mandate of promoting excellence in research, teaching, and community service by preparing morally upright leaders that act as a catalyst for integral human development.

NDU-K HOLDS MATRICULATION CEREMONY FOR KMA CADETS

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai, accompanied by leadership of the university and its Colleges, today Thursday, 1st August 2024 presided a matriculation ceremony of Kenya Military Academy (KMA) Cadets intake 13/27 at University seat in Lanet-Nakuru County .

The matriculating class KMA intake 13/27 have undergone a nine-month foundational military training and now will embark on their academic and professional phase. Upon successful completion of the three-year program, the matriculants shall graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Defence and Security Studies.
Kenya Military Academy is a College of NDU-K mandated to train Officer Cadets of Kenya Defence Force and militaries of allied countries. It’s also a premier institution for basic foundational military officer training and intellectual development.

In his address to the congregants, the VC lauded the matriculants for their successful completion of the first phase of their training and urged them to work hard in their studies while observing discipline as they prepared for future military leadership.
Lt Gen Mutai re-affirmed that NDU-K’s mandate remained training and building capacity as well as conducting research and innovation in the niche areas of National security and strategy, so as to contribute to National Security and development.

He maintained that in an effort to develop the innovative leadership required to manage conventional and evolving security challenges, the University continues to partner with other stakeholders to analyze and proffer solutions to internal, regional, and global security challenges and further evaluate their implications on Kenya’s national interests.

The Commandant KMA, Major General Muthuri Kiugu, urged the cadets to maintain discipline throughout their academic journey , emphasizing that the NDU-K curriculum was designed to prepare them for national defence and professional discharge of constitutional duties.

He stressed on the importance of adhering to the fundamental rules and regulations governing their academic development , and highlighted the institution’s growth, attributing it to an emphasis on intellectualism, discipline professionalism, and innovation.
Emphasizing on the values of hard work in achieving academic excellence , Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Academic & Students Affairs Prof. Anne Muigai, informed the cadets that the journey to success requires their full determination, hard work and discipline. She further reminded them that their success requires zeal and enthusiasms to make it to the peak.

During the ceremony, the matriculants took an oath to abide by the rules and regulations governing the University making them bona fide students. The matriculating class comprised cadets from Kenya and allied countries, including Egypt, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Vice-Chancellor (VC), Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai has reaffirmed the University's commitment to offering cutting-edge training and research, creating an enabling academic discourse, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise, necessary to address dynamic security challenges as well as supporting national development.

The VC underscored the importance of the current collaboration between NDU-K and local and International Government Agencies as well as other institutions of higher learning, stating that such partnerships enhance mutual learning, research, and innovation.
The VC made the remarks as he presided over the 11th Regular Senate Meeting (RSM), and 12th University Management Board (UMB) held at the University Seat in Lanet, Nakuru. By authority of the University Statutes, the VC is Chairperson of both RSM and UMB.

“The university has over the last few months undertaken a comprehensive review of a number of its programs in order to conform with the Commission for University Education (CUE) standards and guidelines,” the VC said.

He appreciated the University’s continued ex*****on of its mandate through innovative academic programmes and research. He urged the Senate to remain focused and embrace team work to ensure the University delivers in accordance with its Charter and strive to embed best practices in its processes.

He further implored the members to at all times exercise prudence and fiscal discipline within the confines of the Public Finance and Management Laws and regulations noting that as the surest way of achieving NDU-K objectives.

NDU-K Senate and UMB consists of the Vice-Chancellor (Chairperson), Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Commandants, Principals and Heads of Programmes from the seven (7) NDU-K Colleges, the Registrar Academic Affairs as well as Directors and Heads of various Departments at the Seat.

NDC COURSE 26 – 2023/2024 PARTICIPANTS DEFEND THEIR THESES

Participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 26 – 2023/2024 this week took part in physical and virtual theses defences as part of the process towards a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategy degree of NDU-K. NDC is a College of NDU-K.

While launching the programme on 16th July 24, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs, Prof Anne Muigai encouraged the panellists to conduct the defenses professionally and according to University regulations. She further assured them that the University had availed the necessary resources to ensure the success of the process.

NDC Course 26 will be the second cohort of the University, that was Chartered in 2021, to graduate with an MA degree of NDU-K, after Course 25 Participants graduated in the 1st NDU-K graduation on 17 November 2023. The defences will continue until 31st July 2024.

1ST NDU-K GOLF TOURNAMENT HELD AT NAKURU GOLF CLUB

Over two hundred golfers teed off at the Nakuru Golf Club (NGC) in the Inaugural National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Golf Tournament on Saturday, 13 July 2024.

The one-day tournament was sponsored by NDU-K in collaboration with Kingdom Bank saw both men and women golfers from across the country competing in various golf categories; the longest drive, both men and women, best nine, and the guest winner. There were also special categories, which included KDF winner, veteran winner, senior and junior golfer category. Those who emerged victorious in their respective categories were awarded with trophies and goodies.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Finance & Administration Major General Thomas Nga'ng'a, emphasized NDU-K’s core mandate of training and conducting research and innovation in the niche area of national security and strategy.
He expressed his gratitude to NGC for hosting the tournament and all the sponsors for their support, saying their gesture exemplified what partnerships between the institutions can do to boost sports and other spheres of the country’s development. He further asked them to continue to stand with NDU-K as it continued to achieve its set objectives.

On his part, the Chairperson NGC, Mr. Titus Lusaka lauded the University management for choosing their club to host the inaugural tournament stating that the existing partnership with the University and the club is a clear indication that good things can happen when agencies come together for a noble cause. He further reiterated the additional need for the University and NGC to collaborate in projects that will benefit communities in the Nakuru region.

Also present at the event was Managing Director of Kingdom Bank, Mr. Anthony Mburu who in his remarks hailed the partnership between NDU-K and his organization terming the partnership a great step in redefining their relationship with NDU-K and wider KDF fraternity.

Also at the event were DVC Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Maj Gen William Shume, Commandant Joint Command & Staff College (JCSC) Major General Eric Kinuthia, serving and retired General, and Senior military officers and NDU-K faculty and staff.
Golf is part of the NDU-K’s wellness programmes as well as stakeholder outreach strategies.

NATIONAL DEFENCE COLLEGE PARTICIPANTS VISIT NDU-K

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) today hosted the National Defence College (NDC) Course 27-2024/2025 participants at the University Seat, Lanet.

The NDC staff and course participants, led by the College Deputy Commandant Military Major General Stephen Mutuku and Deputy Commandant Civil Amb Simon Nabukwesi, were on a induction tour at the NDU-K where they were apprised on University’s mandate of training and building capacity as well as conducting research and innovation in the niche area of National security and strategy.

NDC, a College of NDU-K, runs an NDU-K Master of Arts as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in National Security and Strategy Courses designed to prepare the participants, comprising senior military officers, senior public servants and their counterparts from allied countries, for higher responsibilities. Further, it enhances Whole-of-Government effort in addressing national security matters.

In his address to the visiting cohort, NDU-K Vice- Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai emphasized the critical role of NDU-K in proffering practical solutions to contemporary and future security challenges through sharpening skills in strategic and analytical thinking as well as conducting research.

The VC further highlighted the various dynamic security challenges and the need for flexible and knowledgeable personnel coupled with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary defence issues to remedy the ever-evolving security complexities. He also encouraged the participants to actively engage with experts and professionals at the university , in seeking to learn and understand the practical applications of the theories they study at the college.
“NDU-K is committed to providing you with the best learning experience, ranging from the lectures and resource personnel who will assist you develop the required skills and knowledge,” added the VC.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Academic & Students Affairs Prof. Anne Muigai expressed optimism that the induction visit would enhance the students’ understanding of academic endavours while at the University, noting that good induction helps students settle down faster.

The cohort is made up of 67 participants drawn from Kenya Defence Forces, Ministries, Departments & Agencies, and allied countries in Africa and Asia, reflecting a commitment to National, regional and global security cooperation.

CHIEF OF STAFF AND HEAD OF PUBLIC SERVICE CLOSES COURSE

The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) on 2nd July 2024 hosted the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Mr. Felix Koskei, at International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), when he presided over the closing ceremony of Ethics and Leadership for National Security Course.

IPSTC is a College of NDU-K mandated to conduct training, education and research, informing military, police and civilian personnel in all aspects of peace support operations in order to improve the effectiveness of the response to complex emergencies.
The aim of the course was to equip participants with the necessary national security awareness critical to the ex*****on of their mandates as well as concepts of ethical leadership and governance and its profound impacts on national security dynamics.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Koskei, congratulated the participants on successfully completing the course and encouraged them to apply the knowledge and skills gained to advance the nation's security and uphold constitutional values.

He observed that presentations on, Concept of State and National Interest, Instruments of National Power, Kenya’s Geostrategic Importance in the Region, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, Economic Policy, Kenya’s Boarders and Boundaries, Whole of Government Approach, National Values, Combating Economic Crimes, Strategic Communication and Government Protocol and Etiquette among others were critical in equiping participants with essential skills to address complex security challenges as well as fostering national development.

Vice Chancellor, Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai, making his remarks on behalf of Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, lauded the Public Service for partnering with the University to deliver the Ethics and Leadership Course. He also thanked the facilitators for well delivered lectures during the training.
At the same plenary, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Major General William Shume, emphasized the significance of the training in the realm of governance, leadership and National Security.

The course which brought together Principal Secretaries drawn from all Government Ministries, was organized and held in three cohorts, each cohort taking two days of training commencing 25th June 2024 and ending 2nd July 2024.

NDU-K RECEIVES 3RD COHORT FOR ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP FOR NATIONAL SECURITY COURSE

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovation and Security Studies, Major General William Shume on 1st July 2024 presided over the opening ceremony of the 3rd cohort of the Ethics and Leadership for National security course hosted at International Peace and Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Karen, Nairobi. IPSTC is a College of NDU-K.

The two- day course is designed to enhance National Security awareness for Principal Secretaries to enable effective contribution to socio-economic development and human security for the realization of a secure, prosperous and peaceful Kenya.

While making his opening remarks on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai, the DVC, pointed out that the course is designed for capacity building and training to equip the participants with requisite management and leadership skills and competencies for efficient ex*****on of their mandate.
“We believe at the end of this training, you will be our good ambassadors. The course requires a collective approach, and that is why you are all here today. This training is structured in a way that will allow you to fully engage with our experts and at the end of it, you should be able to help us improve some of the aspects of the training in the realm of governance, leadership and national security, where decisions shape the trajectory of institutions citing the experiences that you will gain through the course,” Maj General Shume added.

While making his presentation on the Defence Policy, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General John Omenda said that the Policy a framework of norms, principles, strategies, guidelines, and means designed to enable defence and protection the country from threats to its territory and sovereignty, adding that it is inextricably linked to the other government policies.

After completion of course, participants are expected to better contribute in shaping the strategic direction, understanding and perception of national security issues, in order to improve their ability to deliver on their mandates.

National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Finance & Administration, Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a, has urged University staff to adopt innovation and emerging technology to enable the University to offer practical solutions to mitigate the various security challenges and influence national security policy and strategy.

He said that NDU-K is committed to adapting to the evolving technology through advancing practical research and fostering a culture of excellence so as to bolster national security and development.

The DVC made the remarks when he presided over the official opening of a three-day training workshop on Science, Technology, and Innovation Performance Contracting Indicator at the University seat in Lanet-Nakuru. The training is facilitated by a team from National Commission for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI).

“We gather today to discuss and strategize on a topic that is crucial not only to our institution but for the future of education and progress for the nation at large,” he said.

The DVC said Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) has evolved into an economic driver for growth, social development, and individual prosperity.

He affirmed the importance of the workshop saying that the partnership between NDU-K and NACOSTI would enrich the University's strategic vision to enable its alignment with national development objectives.

ETHICAL LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE IN NATIONAL SECURITY SPECTRUM

National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), Vice-Chancellor (VC) Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai today presided over the opening ceremony of an Ethics and Leadership for National Security Course at the National Defence College (NDC) in Karen, Nairobi.

The course which is a collaboration between NDU-K and the Executive Office of the President is designed to equip participants with the necessary national security awareness as well as concepts of ethical leadership and governance and its impact on national security dynamics, critical to the ex*****on of participant’s mandates. The course brings together strategic leaders from all Government Ministries.

In his opening remarks, the VC, underscored the significance of the course saying the quality of knowledge and skills achieved will have valuable outcomes in determining the national security strategy from the perspective of the global economy, collective defence commitments and consideration for the public and private sector especially in an era where threats have a strong transnational character.

"The objective of the course is to equip you with the requisite national security awareness critical to ex*****on of your mandates. Valuable insights will be shared on leadership and governance skills, national interests, instruments of national power, Whole of Government Approach in dealing with national security issues, as well as topics covering government protocol & etiquette processes", he added.

NDU-K HOLDS TRAINING IN PRODUCTIVITY MAINSTREAMING

National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Finance & Administration Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a, today presided over the closing ceremony of a workshop on Productivity Mainstreaming for University staff held at the University Seat in Lanet, Nakuru.

The one-week training was a collaborative venture between the NDU-K and National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (NPCC) and was tailored towards enlightening staff on productivity as envisioned in performance contracting by enhancing and embedding measurement and assessment of efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources, such as labour and capital, to accomplish desired output, product or service while minimizing expenses. The training is also in line with the Performance Contracting Guidelines for the financial year 2023/2024, where productivity has been included as a new indicator. It was facilitated by the experts from NPCC and Salaries & Remuneration Commission (SRC).

During the ceremony, Maj Gen. Ng’ang’a, said Productivity Mainstreaming is a crucial accountability tool which aids staff in aligning their individual performance with the broader objective of achieving efficiency, effectiveness, and ultimately boost service delivery across all departments. He further expressed his optimism that the depth and quality of knowledge the participants have been exposed to will contribute immensely in shaping NDU-K's Vision and Mission of being a premier centre of excellence in training and research in National Security and Strategy as well as contributing to National development.

At the same event, the Secretary of NPCC, Dr. Nahashon Moitaleel, underscored the importance of culture change as a key driver of productivity. He emphasised that the initiative encourages a zero-tolerance to waste without compromising quality while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

While acknowledging the significance of the training, the Director Examinations, Brigadier Elizabeth Omollo, expressed gratitude to NPCC for the enlightening experience stating that the knowledge gained would not only make the institution more efficient and competitive but would also mark a transformative journey where services would be delivered in the most effective and efficient way.
The training encompassed various topics among them; Productivity measurement, factors influencing productivity, development of metrics, the objectives of metrics and the productivity management framework. Both theory and practical exercises were incorporated to ensure comprehensive learning and experience.
