Introducing another face behind ASOLA, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Will Bunten Wamaru.
From an early age, Will has been enthusiastic about the outdoors. A boy scout for life, Kenyan Adventurer, Outdoor Educator, International Mountain Guide, Photographer, Naturalist and Safari Guide. Driven by an unparalleled passion for the outdoors and a profound respect for natural and cultural resources alike; Will organizes and leads, unique and unforgettable trips around the globe.
At 9 years, he spent 3 days on a wilderness course with the National Outdoor Leadership School and in the same year attempted to summit Mt Kenya. For the past 6 years, he has worked as a senior instructor at NOLS, leading trips in both Africa and the United States. Will is passionate about giving Kenyan youth greater access to outdoor education and character development through Ubuntu as a core value.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Nairobi and is a passionate naturalist.

Who we are

The Africa School of Outdoor Leadership and Adventure (ASOLA) is a social enterprise that is committed to the development of leadership skills and character through adventure-based outdoor education. We introduce young people to the benefits of outdoor experiences: a healthy lifestyle, practical life skills, outdoor recreation skills, resilience, self-confidence, self-reliance and an appreciation for the natural world.

Our programs are designed to provide a challenging learning environment that allows participants to get out of their comfort zone and explore their leadership potential. Our curriculum is emergent and follows international standards of holistic experiential education. With a high student-to-instructor ratio and extended wilderness trips, the students are supported by our highly skilled and passionate outdoor educators to become ethical leaders in their lives, schools, and communities.

Our Approach

ASOLA combines leadership and adventure education with character development through value ethic discourse and mentoring. Our model uses remote areas to teach these lessons through hiking, camping, rock climbing, and conservation studies. Our instructors bring a lot of experience and passion to create transformative experiences for our participants.

We are a program that offers out-of-school time enrichment and adds value to formal education and socialization of adolescents. Our model is strengthened by the peer-centered support and adult let activities for youth. Ubuntu informs our value ethics and creation of aninclusive course environment. Through diverse challenges, we help our participants discover their inherent leadership skill and we mentor them to build life skills that empower them to reach their full potential.

By building compassionate and ethical leaders, we are promoting peaceful coexisting and ally-ship at a time that we need it the most. Spending extended time learning and enjoying beautiful and serene wilderness areas, our participants explore their individual, group and societal core values. The conservation studies curriculum nurtures curiosity for the natural world and nurtures the participants into conservationists.

Our Programs

1. Navigate Program

Navigate Program is designed for young adults to interact with other adolescents in a new environment while receiving coaching, support, and mentorship from our instructors. They receive tools for self-discovery, communication, critical thinking, conflict resolution, judgment, self-awareness and the opportunity to practice leading their peers. We create a safe space where they can discuss the challenges of growing up, engage in conversations around sensitive subjects, and learn to empathize with each other’s experiences.

It is a dynamic program that takes into consideration the social-cultural changes in society and the pressures that they present to teenagers. It enables them to recognize these and learn to adapt and enrich their lives with perspectives and coping strategies. Throughout the course, the topic of diversity and inclusion is given core space and we like to remind the students that the course is an extension of the diverse communities they live in.

Under the Navigate programs, we have 3-course types that allow diverse groups of teenagers to feel comfortable within the group. Even though they use the same model, they attract different identities.

a. Shine to Womanhood Adventure (13-15, 16-18): allows girls to explore the outdoors in an environment that is supportive and that recognizes the exclusionary nature of these activities and other opportunities alike for women. It empowers them to lead peers and develop leadership skills and express their strengths as women of grit.

b. Journey to Modern Manhood (13-15, 16-18) exposes teenage boys to instructors, and role models they can identify with and are passionate about embracing positive masculinity.

c. Youth Leadership Adventure (13-15, 16-18): Is a co-educational/mixed program where boys and girls step out of their comfort zone and spend socially and physically challenging time with peers. Gender dynamics, stepping up as a leader, and learning to communicate with people of diverse identities are key learning goals for this program.

2. Gap Year Adventure (18-22)

Discover our transformational co-educational outdoor program that provides a safe space for teenagers to learn and grow. The participants for this program are waiting to join university, tertiary colleges, trade school or start their personal journeys to adulthood. The program is designed to provide physical, social and cultural challenges that not only push their limits; but, also provide them with an adventure of their lifetime in the wilderness.

During this transitional stage in their lives, we encourage them to think bigger, dream higher and be the best that they can be. We provide proportionate physical and mental challenges for them and give a lot of leadership opportunities which not only boosts their resilience, creative thinking but also social skills and independent living. They grow into motivated young adults who are ethical change agents in their communities.

· Defining personal core values and taking ethical standpoints.

3. Outdoor Leadership

Do you enjoy spending time outside hiking, camping, running, fishing, birdwatching, peak summits, climbing or mountaineering? This program recognizes that the outdoors is a great escape for most people and offers a space for everyone to seek fulfillment in their lives. Any outdoor activity has inherent risk and we aim to be a holistic educational program to learn leadership, risk management, ethical and professional outdoor recreation. This is an opportunity to hone your skills with solid instruction and practice leading others in similar situations.

Come to learn how to read topographic maps, plan an expedition, mountain safety, and terrain management, gear choice, proficiency in outdoor camping while practicing minimum impact outdoor ethics.

· Emergency procedures, crisis management, and search and rescue.

· Glacier and technical climbing.

4. Custom Adventures

If you are an organization or school that is looking to expose your people to the benefits of our transformational courses, here is what you are looking for. Team building, motivation, group forming, outdoor pursuits, and class adventures are but a few of programs that we run for different partners.

You will work with a program representative from ASOLA to customize a course for you that works with our model to meet your organization’s goals and expected outcomes. This course type is minimum 5 days to allow our model to be effective.
