Umbrelle of Hope is opgericht door Wambui Gicheru, geboren in Nyeri, als jonge vrouw heeft zij gestudeerd en gewerkt in West-Europa. Samen met haar man is ze eigenaar van een zelfstandige onderneming in Eindhoven. Tijdens regelmatige bezoeken aan familie zag ze de bijna uitzichtloze omstandigheden, waarin sommige kinderen opgroeien. Voor haar aanleiding om de stichting Umbrella of Hope op te richt
