It is an exciting time of the year here in Kenya, as we enter into our 2021 main harvest. As you may know, Kenya is blessed with 2 crops a year: we have diverse areas producing coffee, however generally the main Kenyan harvest is from October to December, with a fly crop from June to August.
Mount Kenya Specialty Tea & Coffee Co. stands at 1,870m high, east of the Aberdare ranges and west of the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here, blessed with consistent rainfall and mild temperatures of 18-260C, our coffee bushes thrive and produce our delicious specialty coffee.

Stewards of the land – Celebrate with Mount Kenya Specialty Tea & Coffee where we take our environmental responsibilities seriously
East of the Aberdare ranges and west of the slopes of Mount Kenya you will find our coffee estate of 1000 trees. We also work with over 700 cooperatives and 3,000 individual coffee farmers across Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon and the Rift Valley. Together we produce our single origin, organic Arabica coffee. With an intense fragrance and aroma of fruits, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, citrus, black current and sweet wine with a cream aftertaste, and an overall clean and balanced profile, our cupping scores speak for themselves at 88-90.
The high-quality and exquisite flavours of our coffee are a result of perfect coffee-growing environments, attention to very high standards of quality control and meticulous preparation.
Our coffee trees sit amidst pristine rainforest at altitudes over 1800m, qualifying as Strictly High Grown, fed by the crystal-clear waters of the Tana River tributaries.
Our farm is also home to wild rabbits, antelope, porcupines and many varieties of birds.
We work hard to ensure that our coffee is sustainably grown. We source organic goats’ manure from the pastoral community in Maasai land, apply only the very best agricultural practices.
Our land is terraced, and we apply mulching to avoid soil erosion and preserve soil moisture. We follow pruning procedures and guidelines as directed by the Coffee Research Foundation Institute (CRI) ensuring the right cherry-to-leaf ratio, and which also keeps pests away, eliminating our need for synthetic chemicals for disease and pest control. This also allows sunlight pe*******on and air-circulation all helping to achieve high quality premium green coffee beans.
To preserve water, we pulp our cherry and dry our ripe red cherries and honey coffee through natural processing.
All our micro-lots are fully traceable and yield premium prices that return profits to our farmers and create wealth and improve wellbeing. We want to provide sustainable jobs for youth and women, and work to change young people’s perceptions and experiences of coffee farming as a viable business that works in harmony with the natural environment.
Today, on World Rainforest Day, we celebrate this beautiful land which gives us some of the world’s finest speciality coffees.

I am a coffee farmer and a coffee Q-Grader. I take great pride in what we have achieved, bringing our amazing coffee to the world and returning profits to our farmers who, with great dedication, farm our coffee responsibly.
A scores coffees utilizing standards developed by the
(SCAA). The system quantifies taste attributes such as acidity, body, flavour, aftertaste, uniformity, balance and sweetness. I use the Q system to check the quality of our own coffees all the way through the coffee supply chain from my farm to our roast coffee for local market consumption and green beans for our regional and international markets.
By applying a score to all our fully traceable coffee micro-lots, I also can judge quality for the small-scale farmers I source from – this means we achieve very high cupping scores.
We have invested in our own infrastructure and systems to make sure that not only our processing but our packaging, transportation, shipping and logistics maintain our high standards throughout, and everyone involved, from the farmer to the buyer, can be assured of very high-quality coffee.
