The future of prosperity and security for the United States is intertwined with . Kate Rebholz, Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Mission to ASEAN (USASEAN) in Jakarta, met Cambodian Senior Official to ASEAN Kung Phoak for a wide-ranging discussion on cooperation between our two countries and with the region. Later in the day, she met with officials at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation to discuss cyber security, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence.

DCM Rebholz opened her visit to the Kingdom with a productive discussion with alumni of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) – the emerging leaders in Cambodia and the region.

“On January 11, International Human Trafficking Awareness Day, I call on the governments of countries of origin and destination to stop treating the victims of human trafficking as criminals,” said Tola Moeun, director of NGO CENTRAL and an advocate for the victims of trafficking. “Every day, in every country in the world, human traffickers exploit people for profit. Human trafficking comes in many forms, but the trafficking of humans for the purpose of labor exploitation continues to be one of the least acknowledged.”

Tola and CENTRAL have made a difference in Cambodia by providing victims with legal and social support and conducting outreach to labor unions and the most vulnerable populations to prevent them from being exploited. “The poor and the vulnerable are most at risk. More than 70% of detected trafficking victims are women and girls, while nearly one third are children,” he added.

The United States supports efforts to ensure justice for victims and accountability for all who are complicit in the crime of human trafficking. We will continue to work with a variety of stakeholders in Cambodia to prevent trafficking, identify and prosecute perpetrators, and protect the victims of these crimes.

Meet Puthi Yong, a junior at the University of Management and Economics in Kampong Cham and the winner of this year’s U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh holiday card contest. Even though he studies law, Puthi has been drawing since age 8, inspired by his late father’s passion for art.

“As a Cambodian, I would like to express love to the people of the United States and wish everyone a happy holiday with this card,” Puthi said. His design combines two kinds of flowers: the rumdol representing Cambodia and the poinsettia representing winter holidays. The U.S. and Cambodian flags are connected together to show the artist’s wish for the relationship between the two countries to continue to be strong.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, senior State Department official for East Asia and the Pacific Deputy Assistant Secretary Melissa Brown told reporters. Caritas Trafficking in Persons Shelter in Kandal Province offers a safe haven for victims of human trafficking, forced labor, and internet scamming. During her visit to Cambodia, senior official Deputy Assistant Secretary Melissa Brown heard experiences of survivors and saw the ongoing efforts to provide them safety and justice.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Melissa Brown made a solemn visit to Phnom Penh’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, an important reminder of transitional justice and the importance of building peace, where she witnessed efforts to preserve the clothing of Khmer Rouge victims at the site. For the prisoners, the clothes on their backs were all they had while they awaited their fates. The preservation effort is supported by grants from the State Department’s Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Since Peace Corps returned to Cambodia last year, volunteers have taught over 10,000 students alongside their Cambodian counterparts.
