Giving Cambodia's Children the Gift of Water Wisdom By Sarath Tek, Executive Director, Hile Teuk Kampuchea (HTK)

As a parent, our deepest instinct is to nurture and protect our children, shielding them from harm as they grow. But in Cambodia, a hidden threat lurks close to home, robbing over 2,000 precious young lives each year. Drowning is the leading cause of death for Cambodian children, ending more promising futures than any other cause.

Behind each of these heartbreaking statistics is a family left devastated, wondering, "What if I had done more?" This tragic loss of potential also hinders Cambodia's growth, as youth represent the nation's future. Drowning tragically intersects issues of early childhood development, public health, education, and infrastructure. An integrated, multi-sectoral approach is needed to turn the tide.

While increased supervision and barriers around water sources can help safeguard toddlers, survival swimming skills are crucial for older children. Here, organisations like Hile Teuk Kampuchea (HTK) shine a ray of hope. HTK trains local community members to teach essential water safety and rescue techniques, empowering Cambodia's youth with what I call "water wisdom".

Interestingly, building this aquatic capability boosts water confidence and aligns with educational development goals, instilling essential life skills. Such holistic drowning prevention programmes represent low-hanging fruit for existing rural healthcare and schooling initiatives. With modest resources, and HTK's help, they can integrate supplemental water safety training, leveraging existing facilities and personnel.

However, political will and public awareness are still lacking in Cambodia. Shockingly, many remain unaware of drowning's immense child death toll, hindering prevention efforts. Here, emotional marketing can build crucial understanding, using empathy, stories, and images to spotlight this overlooked issue. Campaigns educating caregivers and youth on water risks show promise in tackling drowning.

We must also improve data collection, which is the foundation of sound policy. Many drowning deaths still go unrecorded, meaning key indicators and trends are obscured. Simple community-based reporting and more robust clinic logging procedures can shed better light.

This holistic approach - integrated training programmes, awareness campaigns, and meticulous monitoring - gives Cambodian parents the tools to gift their children water wisdom. With this precious knowledge, youth gain confidence and skills to enjoy the water safely, securing brighter futures free of fear. Cambodia's rivers and ponds can transition from threats into gateways of growth.

Congratulations to the First Generation, 15 Volunteer Teachers of Hile Teuk Kampuchea (HTK) who have successfully completed teacher training for the delivery of drowning prevention interventions: Water Safety, Rescue (reach & throw), & Resuscitation (CPR). The attendee understands the drowning process and knowledge of drowning and prevention themes. They can demonstrate CPR with ventilations (rescue breathing) for infants, children and adults, based on European Resuscitation Council guidelines! Our instructors will continue to deliver and maintain our program in their schools and communities, ensuring its sustainability and impact. How We Taught 288 Children to Save Lives in Siem Reap!

Water safety is a matter of life and death in Cambodia, where drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged between 1 and 17. On average, six children die from drowning every day in Cambodia. That’s why our organisation, Hile Teuk Kampuchea (HTK), aims to reduce child drowning and related injuries through water safety education and survival swimming training.
Last month, we had the opportunity to conduct our program in Siem Reap province, one of the most affected regions by drowning in Cambodia. With the support of our partner, SWIM Cambodia, we reached 288 students (136 girls) from one primary school in Siem Reap, teaching them about water safety, safe rescue and resuscitation with CPR for adults, children and babies.
We also trained and certified 15 community volunteers (8 women) as water safety instructors, using our trainer of trainers program that follows the European and Aquatic Survival guidelines. These instructors will continue to deliver and maintain our program in their schools and communities, ensuring its sustainability and impact.
The program was a success in terms of the skills and knowledge the students gained and the fun and joy they experienced. Many had never been in a pool before, and some feared water. But after our training, they overcame their fears and felt confident about rescuing someone in trouble in the water.

We are proud of what we achieved in Siem Reap, and we are grateful to our partner, SWIM Cambodia, for their generous support and collaboration. We plan to continue working with them and other stakeholders to expand our program to more children and communities in Cambodia and to contribute to the national and global efforts to end the drowning epidemic.

អង្គការហែលទឹកកម្ពុជា - Hile Teuk Kampuchea Organization, we are very pleased to share the benefits of swimming to the Women's Leadership Network in Siem Reap. Discovering the benefits and techniques of swimming to help improve their health, save themselves and their children from drowning. The Women's Network also explored the vision and mission of the HTK Organization. The organization's mission is to reduce the drowning of children and the injuries caused by drowning.
HTK's plans to work for the first time, starting with a team of volunteers​. They will teach about water safety, CPR, and safe rescue to children, youth, parents and guardians in the classroom and community setting. SWIM Cambodia supported our localised partner, HTK, to fund and recruit their first appointment of Executive Director. We are happy to announce successful recruitment of Sarath, who starts work this week! We will be working closely with Sarath, as she will be leading safe and effective delivery of drowning prevention interventions in Cambodia. She will be putting strategic plans into practice, networking, generating funds and mobilising a new team of trainers. We wish her all the best as she starts this important role.
