Fourty years after the great grandparents, here is our daughter Naïs, visiting Bantey Srei temple on a late Sunday afternoon…
In those days, roads were very bumpy and it was an adventure to get to that remote area. We would reach Bantey Srei by 5pm when visitors were gone to feel even better the magical vibes of that Angkorian jewel.

This is the kind of hint that we share with our guests, visiting the temples without the crowd.

That photo is my mother and my French grandparents at Bantey Srei temple in 1965, when they visited Cambodia after my birth.
In those days the original statues were in the temple; they are now kept at Angkor Conservation in Siem Reap and replaced by ciment statues. One cannot anymore access the first enclosure nor sit of the steps as did my family !
Considered to be the jewel of Angkorian art, Bantey Srei was built from year 967 and is one of the smallest sites in Angkor but includes some of the finest carvings on Earth.

Looking for a refreshing, mouth watering and easy-to-make salad? Try our delicious pomelo salad with shrimps!

Ingredients:

200g pomelo
50g peeled shrimp
1 tsp toasted coconut flakes
1 tsp fried garlic
10 mint leaves
1/2 sliced shallot
1 tbsp fish sauce
2 tsp fresh lime juice
1 tbsp brown sugar
Instructions:

1. Toast 1 tsp each of coconut flakes and fried garlic in a skillet for 2 minutes, then set aside to cool.
2. Whisk 1 tbsp fish sauce, 2 tsp lime juice, 1 tbsp brown sugar, garlic, and chili (optional) in a small bowl for the dressing.
3. Cut and peel 200g pomelo into bite-sized pieces, and add 10 mint leaves and 1/2 sliced shallot.
4. Pour the dressing over the pomelo and stir gently to combine.
5. Top with the toasted coconut flakes and fried garlic.

Serve and enjoy!

Siem Reap Art Tours are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our wonderful friend Darryl Collins. Originally from Adelaide, Australia, Darryl was an incredible cultural historian who moved to Cambodia in 1994 where he worked with the National Museum of Cambodia as a consultant before moving over to the Royal University of Fine Arts, specifically concentrating in the department of Archaeology.

Darryl relocated to Siem Reap in 2007 where he regularly gave compelling talks on the history of Cambodian design, architecture and archaeology. He was particularly passionate about the local wooden houses we see dotted throughout this magnificent Kingdom.

In 2021 Darryl published 'Cambodian Wooden Houses. 1,500 Years of Khmer Heritage'.

A true gentleman and scholar, thank you Darryl for being in our lives, we are very much blessed with the legacy you left us.

Our old family kitchen holds countless heart warming and humble memories.

Incredible smells wafting from the oven as our children would cheerfully prepare cakes under clouds of flour. Nostalgia at its finest.
