How Does Print Direction affect Print Strength?
Many 3D printing users are already aware that the part strength can vary depending on the direction of the printing.
Today, we'll discuss the fabWeaver team experiment that was conducted to see how the strength of the ABS filament printout will change depending on the printing direction.
Let's take a look at the actual difference in strength from the fabWeaver team's test.
Why the Strength Varies Depending on the Printing Direction?
FFF 3D printing is the process of building a shape by stacking layers in the height direction (also known as Z-Axis direction)
The basic printing process for FFF 3D printers is the repeating series of actions of melting the materials, applying one layer, and then hardening it over.
During this repeated layer stacking in the Z-axis direction, there will be a significant timing difference on the hardening of the extruded materials, and this inevitably makes the bonding force weaker than printing in the other directions.
Looking at the simple figure below, users can observe how the structure on the right side will be less tolerable to Z-axis forces compared to the structure on the left side.
The fabWeaver team conducted an actual printing experiment to see the difference in strength depending on the printing direction.

Secret of Industrial 3D Printer Bed Temperature : Glass Transition Temperature

Glass transition can be defined as the transition of a material from a hard glassy state to a viscous, yet flexible state (or vice versa).

While passing the glass transition temperature, the molecule becomes a rubbery state that can only move little by little.

If you look at the TDS (Technical Data Sheet) provided by the 3D printing material manufacturer, you can check the various physical properties of the material.

In the TDS, some of the physical properties included are the ultimate tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break. These properties were first investigated in our blog regarding the stress-strain curve.

Let's take look at the glass transition temperature, which is one of the many other physical properties included in the TDS.

1. Glass Transition Temperature
Glass transition means the transition of a material from a hard glassy state to a viscous but flexible state (or vice versa).

In other words, think of when a hardened caramel candy turns into a chewy texture while one is chewing.

In a similar manner, when a glass craftsman blows the hot softened glass with his mouth to create a shape, the glass transforms into a solid shape instantly,

The Importance of the Slicer in 3D Printing

1. What is a 'Slicer'?
A slicer is a software that plays one of the most important roles in the 3D printing process.

The slicer enables the 3D printer to recognize the 3D model file, and literally slices the 3D model layer-by-layer.

In other words, the slicer is converting 3D model files such as .STL, .OBJ, etc. into machine language that the 3D printer can read and work on.

This converted machine language is called g-code, it contains information about each layer's nozzle position, nozzle speed, material injection volume, and more.
