After a childhood marked with resounding bombs and trauma amid the Lebanese civil war and the brutal murder of her father as the family attempted to flee the country, Annie Kurkdjian went on a long journey of experimentation, recovery, studying and self-search prior to ultimately finding her solace in art.
Her paintings depict subjects in tortured postures, often fixating the viewer with numb eyes and vaulted shoulders. Their bodies are visually dissected and compositionally analyzed into shivery, poignant structures that convey tragedy and prompt questions about the meaning of life.
According to the artist, answers lie in the sincerity of the artistic approach. “Art is capable of sublimating everything, war, crime, shame, sickness and total hell,” she observes.
An intertwined interplay of primal shapes and playful pigments, Charles Khoury’s work never ceases to catch the eye with its heart-capturing vitality.

Mansour El Habre, [2014]
Swinging with Annie Kurkdjian
Her paintings are sober and at the same time powerful, they portray beings in tortured postures, monstrous, grotesque. Sometimes they fixate on the beholder, with a numb eye and vaulted shoulders, as if harassed or lost. Their bodies seem dissected, analyzed, they form shivery and poignant images. These big canvases breathing tragedy interrogate us about life itself. According to Annie the answers lurk in the sincerity of the artistic approach: “Art is capable of sublimating everything, war, crime, shame, sickness and total hell”.
