Cord blood banking means preserving the newborn stem cells found in the blood of the umbilical cord and tissue.

 

The stem cells in cord blood can be collected without any risk to the baby or mother. Cord blood is used for therapy today in hospitals around the world. There are clinical trials that use cord blood for both stem cell transplants and emerging therapies in regenerative medicine.

 

Cord blood banking includes the whole process from collection through storage of newborn stem cells for future medical purposes. If needed for treatment, the cord blood bank will release the stem cells to your physician.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In honor of this month, we are sharing tips on how to do a breast self-exam.

A breast self-exam can help you spot signs of breast cancer early on before it spreads. This exam should be performed once a month. It takes no more than a few minutes.

Small amounts of a baby’s DNA passes into the bloodstream of the mother during pregnancy. New technology allows us to analyze this DNA directly from the mother’s blood and screen for chromosomal abnormalities.

Previously, it was only possible to test for these abnormalities with highly invasive procedures that carried a risk to the pregnancy. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) can be performed between weeks 10-12 and pregnancy, and amniocentesis performed between weeks 15–18 of pregnancy. These tests carry up to 1 in 150 or 1 in 100 chance of miscarriage respectively.

Initial screening with non-invasive prenatal testing can help to avoid this potentially unnecessary and invasive testing. There is no risk to mother or baby and NIPT provides the earliest testing available.

Delayed Cord Blood Clamping:

❌Myth:  When clamping of the umbilical cord is delayed, there aren’t enough stem cells left in the cord to make storage or donation.

✅ Fact:  Delayed clamping can reduce the volume of stem cells remaining in the umbilical cord, but that does not necessarily make the volume unsuitable for storage or donation.  If the baby’s cord blood is being stored for a known use – such as transplant of another family member– delayed clamping is not advised. Expectant parents should discuss options for delayed clamping with their obstetrics provider.
