A haunted holiday in East Asia, the Hungry Ghost Festival is a celebrationĀ to honor ancestors. On August 18, people burn candles and colorful papers to help the spirits find their way back home and bring good fortune. As food offering is always involved in Asian holidays, itā€™s tradition to set up an altar with cups of rice, peanuts, candies, noodles, fruit and tea for the hungry passing ghosts.

Back in 2019, theĀ KAWS:HOLIDAY traveling sculpture made its way to the majestic Mount Fuji in Japan. The large-scale exhibition was centered around a 40-meter inflatable figure and a unique camping experience for 2,000 campers around it. Taking his art to Mount Fuji has been a dream come true for the artist who was inspired by Japan. When he first created the sculpture, he was thinking about relaxation ā€“ of simply looking up and shutting out the world around him. He hopes this encourages people to embrace lifeā€™s simple pleasures of slowing down and enjoying nature.

In China, the Summer Solstice (Xia Zhi) is the earliest festival in history, celebrating the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year. The Chinese welcome the turn-around of the sun and offer sacrifices to it. The lotus flower is the symbol of this ā€˜yangā€™ season. The traditional meal is cold noodles and streets are filled with noodle vendors.

Early June sees the Dragon Boat (Duanwu) Festival in China. 2,000 years ago, this ancient festival emerged from dragon worship, when boat races were performed to ask the Dragon God for a good harvest. Dragon boats are long, decorated with dragon heads and paddled by 20-30 people. These traditional races have become a worldwide sport. Another enjoyed tradition is zongzi, a stuffed glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
