Last day of included a series of wonderful talks by experts from different disciplines each bringing his study to complete the ‘Sanguszko Carpet’ story and later the overall ‘Kerman Carpets from 1535 to 1750’ story in memory of Alessandro Bruschettini with the help of the municipality of Genoa.

I particularly loved ‘Some Iconographic Puzzles’ talk by Robert Hillenbrand who gave the Sanguszko Miho carpet different voices to speak at the same time not many things but not much!

I also enjoyed ‘A Riot of Colour’ talk by William Robinson who undertook the subject by how dyes are placed rather than by how chemically and scientifically are achieved.
Special thanks to the tireless Michael Frances, .rosso and to all who supported this event.

First day in Milan with an exceptional lecture by Michael Franses on The Darius of the world Qazvin tiger carpet with ‘Paradise Park’ design at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, also called Tappeto delle Tigri
The carpet was produced in central Iran, most probably Qazvin, with the same technique and style of the so-called ‘Salting Group’ carpet around 450 years ago for Safavid Shah Tahmasp's royal court.
The Darius Carpet was bought by Gian Giacomo Poldo Pezzoli on 1855 at a private auction for 80 Austrian Lira.

Final stop in Florence was at the beautiful gallery of Alberto Boralevi which was hosting a beautiful carpet and kilim fragment exhibition. I had the privilege to discover many exceptional pieces, especially a superb 17th century Kerman vase carpet fragment depicting a single plane floral lozenge lattice type and unexpectedly a stunning mini Lebanese silk and metal embroidery thread embroidered lady bag!
These textiles were mainly woven in the village of Zouk Mkayel, the Metn district.
Thank you so much his family, and all who participated in the preparations. It was my first visit to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance; it was a rush of excitement not only for carpets but also for the abundance of magnificent paintings, sculptures, palaces, churches and people.

Alberto Boralevi and Michael Frances guided us in the magical museum’s collection of sculptures, paintings, furniture pieces… and gave an expert talk about the great 15-17th century Bardini’s carpet collection.

A remarkable prayer rug inspired from a keyhole design showing a large cone-shaped lamp hanging down from the top of a pointed arch flanked by two ewers (ibrik) followed by an 8 pointed star medallion at the center of the field surrounded by four geometrical figures set against a deep red field. Carpets depicting similar designs are also called "Bellini" carpets, after the 15th c. Venetian Renaissance artists Giovanni and Gentile Bellini, whose paintings depict similar weavings.

A wonderful talk by Michael Franses and Anna Beselin on 'The Magnificent Sanguszko Carpets' presented by HALI Editor Ben Evans.
The “Sanguszko” carpets took their name from the best-known example (today in the Miho Museum in Japan), formerly belonging to the Polish-Lithuanian Princes Sanguszko at Slavuta, and is reputed to have been seized from the Ottomans at the Battle of Khotyn in 1621

This small group of Safavid carpets (only 14 examples are known) was woven in typical ‘vase-technique’ in the Kerman region of south-central Persia during the 16th century.
Sanguszko carpets are linked by more than one feature: their wool type, their construction and handle, their minor border graphics, the way the dyes are put together, their particularly rich and varied palette, by their artistically sophisticated designs that some owe their origin to China.

Arguably among the most beautiful of all Persian carpets, nine examples of these carpets will be on exhibition in Genoa from 11 November 2022 - 12 February 2023 along with nine related carpets thanks to the Fondazione Bruschettini.
A large format book on Sanguszko carpets to be published by Hali Publications Ltd. in 2025.

A stunning Gashgai rug depicting a inspired from a traditional Persian ‘medallion’. It has been degenerated and by weavers trying to copy fine carpets of the city and became finally more stylized and uncomplicated.
The stepped medallion lies on a dark red field filled with flowering shrubs arranged in a diagonal pattern between two columns.

The design composition takes your eyes on a rollercoaster 🎢 around the diagonally opposed climbing vines spewing small flowers, palmettes and leaves in all sort of shapes and forms across a light gray ground surface split into alternating stripes breaking the rigid verticality and suggesting a feeling of movement.
