March is Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month!

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein in your body, usually in the legs. It is common but serious if the clot travels through your bloodstream and enters your lungs.

Fast Facts:
• Symptoms include: leg swelling, leg pain, and skin discoloration
• DVT can also occur with NO symptoms
• Approximately 1 in 1000 people will develop DVT in their lifetime
• An ultrasound is the prime exam to diagnose the condition
• COVID-19 infection can also be a major cause of deep vein thrombosis

D-dimer is a small piece of protein that is created from a dissolved blood clot.

The D-dimer test looks for this protein in your blood and is useful in detecting blood disorders, such as deep vein thrombosis.

If you have symptoms of leg swelling, pain or tenderness in the legs, or red marks on your legs, you may be suffering from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and you could benefit from this test.

Osteoporosis is a condition where your bones become weak and brittle from tissue loss.

This can be from hormonal changes or Calcium or vitamin D deficiency.

Some symptoms can be:

* Loss of height over time
* Back pain caused by a collapsed or broken vertebra
