Dental health education - OXFORD handbook of clinical dentistry –

What is it? The objective of dental health education is to influence the attitude and behavior of the individual to maintain oral health for life and prevent oral disease.

Primary prevention: seeks to prevent the initial occurrence of a disease or disorder and is aimed at healthy individuals.
Secondary prevention: aims to arrest disease through early detection and treatment.
Tertiary prevention: helps individuals to deal with the effects of the disease and to prevent further recurrence.

Who should give it? All health professionals. In practice, many patients relate better to advice from a hygienist or nurse.

What information should be given? In order to unify the profession’s approach, the Health Education Authority has published a policy document laying out four simple messages:
• Restrict sugar-containing foods to mealtimes.
• Clean teeth and gums thoroughly twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste.
• Attend the dentist regularly.
• Water fluoridation is beneficial.

Prevention of caries by decreasing the availability of microbial substrate in food
This approach aims to take into account the modern habit of ‘ snacking’ ( also known as ‘grazing’ ):
1) Remove sugar from selected foods.
2) Modify sugar-containing foods so that they are less cariogenic.
3) Substitute non-cariogenic sweeteners.
