What is JOUVERT
J'ouvert is a street party celebrated in many Caribbean countries, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St. Lucia, as well as in some cities with large Caribbean diaspora populations, such as New York and London. The word "J'ouvert" comes from the French creole term "jour ouvert," meaning "day open or DayBreak," and refers to the early morning start of the carnival celebrations.

J'ouvert pronounced (Jouvay) typically begins around 4:00 a.m. and lasts until sunrise, with participants dressed in costumes or covered in paint, mud, or oil. The celebration is often accompanied by live music, particularly, calypso/soca, steelpan and drums, as well as dancing, singing and partying.

The origins of J'ouvert can be traced back to the emancipation of African slaves in the Caribbean (1838), who celebrated their newfound freedom with street parties and parades. Today, J'ouvert is an important part of the carnival season in many Caribbean countries, and is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The essence of "Jouvay" remains the same: An exhilarating celebration of Freedom, Culture and Community. It's an experience like no other!
