Today is World Menopause Day. Menopause is still widely misunderstood while millions of women continue to suffer through the uncomfortable and life-threatening symptoms & risk factors associated with perimenopause and postmenopause.

Changes in your body in the years around menopause may raise your risk for certain health problems. Low levels of estrogen and other changes related to aging (like gaining weight) can raise your risk of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and other health issues.

Perimenopause is the time around menopause when your ovaries gradually stop working. This is a natural process that causes physical and emotional symptoms. During that time, your hormones are declining, but you still see periods.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause?

😟Mood changes.
😟Changes in s*xual desire.
😟Trouble concentrating or with memory.
🥵Headaches.
😰Night sweats.
🔥Hot flashes.
😟Vaginal dryness.
😟Trouble with sleep.
😟Weight gain

Post menopause is when periods stop for good. It's diagnosed after 12 months without a menstrual period, vaginal bleeding, or spotting. Menopause can happen in the 40s or 50s.

Postmenopause is a term to describe the time after you've gone through menopause. When you're in postmenopause (or postmenopausal), your menstrual period has been gone for longer than 12 consecutive months.

Common symptoms of menopause

😟Anxiety.
😠Changes in mood – such as low mood or irritability.
😟Changes in skin conditions, including dryness or increase in oiliness and onset of adult acne.
😟Difficulty sleeping – this may make you feel tired and irritable during the day.
😟Discomfort during s*x.
😟Feelings of loss of self.

At St. Rose Medical, we understand that women need support as they go through this life change. Come visit our caring and compassionate gynecologist, Dr. Peter St. Rose to develop a menopause management plan that suits you best. Stomach ulcer, also called a peptic ulcer, is a break in the inner lining of the stomach, the first part of the small intestine, or sometimes the lower esophagus. An ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer, while one in the first part of the intestines is a duodenal ulcer.

Symptoms of stomach ulcers include:

✅️Abdominal pain just below the ribcage.
✅️Indigestion.
✅️Nausea.
✅️Loss of appetite.
✅️Vomiting.
✅️Weight loss.
✅️Bright or altered blood is present in vomit or bowel motions.
✅️Symptoms of anemia, such as light-headedness.

Our expert Gastroenterologist/Internist Dr. Alphonsus St. Rose can perform a gastroscopy to diagnose ulcers and treat them effectively. Gastroscopy is a test to look inside your stomach directly and see whether you have a stomach ulcer. It involves passing a thin, flexible tube (an endoscope) with a camera through into your stomach and the 1st section of the small intestine (duodenum).

If you suspect that you may have a stomach ulcer or you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, make an appointment or walk into our clinic today.

Acid reflux, also called heartburn, is the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. The feeling of acid reflux is heartburn: a mild burning sensation in the mid-chest, often occurring after meals or when lying down.

HEARTBURN ❤️‍🔥

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. This happens because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, doesn’t close properly or relaxes too frequently. The acid irritates the lining of the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. This condition is known as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when it happens frequently.

To cure heartburn, you can make lifestyle changes such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down after eating. Medications like antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors can help reduce acid. In severe cases, surgery might be needed to strengthen the muscle that keeps acid in the stomach.

Are you experiencing the following symptoms? If yes and you are over 40 you may be going through peri menopause. Some women even start at 30.

🌺Irregular periods or skipping periods.

🌺Periods that are heavier or lighter than usual.

🌺Changes in mood like irritability, depression or mood swings.

🌺Low libido.

🌺Hot flashes.

🌺Night sweats.

🌺Vaginal dryness that causes s*xual discomfort during s*x.

Perimenopause means "around menopause" and refers to the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause, marking the end of the reproductive years. Perimenopause is also called the menopausal transition.

Perimenopause can begin in some women in their 30s, but most often it starts in women ages 40 to 44. It is marked by changes in menstrual flow and in the length of the cycle. There may be sudden surges in estrogen.

Ovulation may become erratic and then stop. The menstrual cycle lengthens, and flow may become irregular before your final period. Symptoms are caused by the changing levels of hormones.

This “menopausal transition” brings unpredictable ovulation cycles as estrogen and progesterone hormone levels go up and down. Many women become frustrated with the challenging physical and emotional changes they experiencing during that time which can span from hair loss to depression to dry skin, weight gain, digestive issues and more.

St. Rose Medical is there to help you understand the changes that you are experiencing and assist with strategies to help you overcome them including but not limited to medications, hormone therapy, supplementation, mindfulness practices etc.

August 1st - 7th is world breastfeeding week. Enjoy the funny and informative video below. A little humor sometimes makes things more understandable😊

Breastfeeding can help protect babies against some short- and long-term illnesses and diseases. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed babies are also less likely to have ear infections and stomach bugs.

We know in this modern era where moms are also hardworking breadwinners with demanding schedules breastfeeding can be a challenge.

Here are some helpful tips for new breastfeeding moms.

🤱🏾Ask your supervisor before you return to work where you can go to express milk. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to plan for what you’ll need.

🤱🏾Talk to other coworkers who have pumped milk at the office. Their experience can help inform you on what to expect.

🤱🏾Make sure you have a way to store breastmilk properly. If you don’t have access to a fridge at work, you’ll want to invest in buying a storage container system that can keep your milk cold. If you can use the fridge at work, label your containers and place them in the back of the fridge where it’s coldest.

🤱🏾Take a picture of your baby with you to work. Some moms find that looking at a picture of their baby helps them express milk.

🤱🏾Keep a bottle of water with you during the day to stay hydrated. Make sure you can refill it when necessary.

🤱🏾Consider using a child care facility that’s close to your job. Talk to your employer about visiting your baby during lunch or other breaks to breastfeed. Many child care facilities will accommodate breastfeeding moms.

🤱🏾Make sure your baby can take a bottle before you head back to work. Ask another adult to help bottle train your baby – your baby is more likely to take a bottle from someone

LET'S TALK FIBROIDS TODAY!

We are at the end of July which is Fibroid Awareness Month. Ladies be aware of the symptoms such as: abnormal bleeding, anemia, lower abdominal pain or pressure, frequent urination, pain during s*xual in*******se, and severe menstrual cramps. If you experience any of these, it's essential to get tested for fibroids.

Your well-being is our priority.

Fibroids are common noncancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, and pelvic pain. Understanding fibroids and getting diagnosed early is crucial.

Take control of your uterine health and schedule a screeninh St. Rose Medical.

Fibroid tumors are composed of renegade muscle cells that come together to form a fibrous "knot" or "mass" within the uterus. Although all uterine fibroids are the same, they are categorized based on their location:

🔴Submucosal fibroids are located just under the uterine lining.
🔴Intramural fibroids lie between the muscles of the uterine wall.
🔴Subserol fibroids extend from the uterine wall into the pelvic cavity.

Fibroids most commonly occur between ages 30 and 40, with black women at greatest risk. To date, at least one genetic link has been identified, indicating that fibroids may also run in families.

For some women fibroids cause no symptoms, but when they do, problems often involve heavy menstrual periods and prolonged bleeding.

"They can also cause pelvic or abdominal pain or swelling and increased urination," says Aydin Arici, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Schedule a consultation with our experienced and highly skilled Obstetrician/ Gynecologist Dr. Peter St. Rose for fibroid screening, diagnosis and treatment. Dr St. Rose has performed hundreds of Myomectomies and Hysterectomies throughout his extensive career spanning over 20 years. Our clinic can also facilitate non surgical treatments such as uterine embolization.
