As managers I think we often overlook the importance of cultivating a positive workplace culture to ensure we attract and keep the best talent. After all, aren't we all searching to balance efficient productivity and organizational progress?

Here are my thoughts on Employee Satisfaction and Retention.

As an HR consultant, I've seen the direct impact that workplace culture has on employee satisfaction and retention.

A positive workplace culture not only boosts employee morale and motivation but also attracts top talent and fosters a sense of belonging among employees.

So, what exactly is workplace culture? It's the shared values, beliefs, and behaviors that define an organization and its employees. And, it's crucial to remember that workplace culture is not just about perks and benefits, but it's also about creating a supportive and inclusive environment where employees feel valued and heard.

Here are 5 INSTANT WAYS to create and maintain a positive workplace culture:

1 - Lead by example: Culture starts from the top. Leaders should embody the values and behaviors they want to see in their employees.

2 - Foster open communication: Encourage open and transparent communication between employees and management. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions can help create a culture of trust and collaboration.

3 - Invest in employee development: Investing in employee development and growth shows employees that their growth and success are a priority for the organization.

4 - Encourage work-life balance: Create a culture that supports work-life balance and encourages employees to take time for themselves and their families.

5 - Celebrate success: Recognize and celebrate the achievements of employees and teams. Celebrating success creates a positive and uplifting work environment.

Do you think that Social Media should be used to vet your prospective employees???

WE ALL KNOW that what is said in an interview doesn’t always paint an accurate picture. Now my colleagues know I don’t hold water in my mouth, but let’s try to dissect this one a little because it is a tough one.

In today's digital age, I think that social media has become a prevalent aspect of our personal and professional lives, whether we like it or not. As a result, many employers are turning to social media as a viable tool to vet prospective employees before and after the traditional job interview.

While this approach can provide valuable insights into a candidate's personality and interests, do you think it can also raise several ethical concerns?

On the one hand, social media posts can give employers a glimpse into a candidate's character, communication skills, and interests. This information can help employers make more informed hiring decisions and ensure that they are bringing on individuals who align with their company's values and culture. Additionally, social media posts can reveal RED FLAGS, such as inappropriate behavior or controversial opinions, that would not necessarily be uncovered through traditional methods of vetting.

However, relying on social media posts as the sole basis for evaluating a candidate also raises several ethical and legal concerns. For example, it can be argued that using social media posts to make hiring decisions violates privacy and may lead to discrimination based on irrelevant factors such as race, religion, or political beliefs. Additionally, social media posts may not always accurately reflect a candidate's abilities or qualifications for a position, and using them as a determining factor for hiring can be considered unreliable and unfair.

In conclusion, while social media posts can provide valuable information for employers, they should be used as just one of many factors in the hiring process. Employers should ensure that they are using social media in a responsible and ethical manner, and they should always consider the privacy and legal implications of their actions.

Leadership In Action Retreat at The Victoria Respiratory Hospital

Lewis Management Consultancy Services’ Principal Consultant and CEO, Dr Thecla Lewis, was the feature speaker at the “Leadership in Action” Retreat for Heads of Department of the Victoria Respiratory Hospital. The presentation entitled “Leadership – Identify your style” was delivered with the objective to assist the management team in identifying their personality types that reflect their leadership competences and team building strategies.

Dr. Thecla Fitz-Lewis engaged the team in three groups to participate in a hands on activity called the Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge. Using this exercise, the participants were able to identify leadership characteristics and team dynamics such as; planning, time management, group communication, initiative, observation, creativity, collaboration, competence, coordination, continuous improvement and commitment.

Having an understanding of your leadership style helps you to communicate effectively as a leader, assess others needs and forge productive relationships.

Executive Director of the Victoria Respiratory Hospital, Ms. Nancy Francis, who organized the event had this to say; "Dr Lewis was truly an inspiration to the team, her delivery was timely, since my team felt overwhelmed by the pandemic. The exercise she chose allowed us to understand that teamwork makes the dream work, and how she analyzed every step made us realize the little things we take for granted are so important in the ex*****on of our duties. Every participant expressed profound gratitude to Dr Lewis for her charismatic delivery, which met the objective of the retreat.”
