As many know Tradition is a wooden Carriacou sloop, built by hand on the beach in Windward, Carriacou in 1978. For those who don’t know, the island of Carriacou and its smaller neighboring island Petite Martinique are “Southern Grenadines” and part of the larger island nation of Grenada. For those who know Tradition and her history or are drawn to sailing with us because of her historical significance in how she was built or because of her role in Caribbean sail trading, or if you’re interested in learning more about where Tradition comes from, you’ll want to keep reading…

From Grenada National Trust:
“In a terrific win for Grenadian culture and heritage, the traditional wooden boat building of Carriacou and Petite has been Inscribed in UNESCO's (18.COM) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Traditional wooden boatbuilding is a centuries-old tradition practised in Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada. The men, women and children in the boat-building communities each have specific roles and functions during each stage of the process. Established shipwrights build the boats, felling trees that have been hand-selected for the natural bends and contours of the wood. This must be done during the right phase of the moon, based on guidance provided by elders. The work cannot start in earnest until rum and water have been sprinkled on the keel and stem for the ancestors.

Congratulations to all the ship-builders of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and to all culture bearers generally. The honor of Inscription on the List follows on from GNT's Proud of My Heritage project aimed at recognising the culture and the culture bearers and helping to safeguard their important work.”

We join in congratulating the Grenada National Trust for their efforts and most importantly the boat builders of these beloved islands. We are proud to know many of them including the late builder of Tradition, his son and their skilled peers in Carriacou who help keep Tradition and this incredible craft alive.
