Don't settle for ordinary this week. Be different, and stay away from people that try to force mediocrity on you (trust me, your life will take off!). Get out there, take on the world, give that work stress a BIG hug and take those challenges on like a pro.

Be THE best at what you do. Live your best life and enjoy every moment. Have an awesome week!

"Culture is your only competitive advantage"

Was honoured to be a speaker at the HR Think Tank 2023 organised by the Association of HR Professionals Sri Lanka where I delivered my talk "It's a great place to work, but everyone's leaving: Building culture in crisis".

The response to the topic has been overwhelming and I thank you all for the love and comments I have been receiving.

I have decided to turn the talk into a detailed article containing all the insights, stats and observation based research that went into it. Will share the link to access the full article soon.

These are some of the key circulars published by the inland revenue department with reference to the new income taxation. It is your responsibility as a citizen to read them and know how your tax reduction is calculated as an employee or as a professional or otherwise.

💡It is also your duty to ask questions, as it is your hard earned money and your right to do so. But you must read and make yourself aware first. That is step one.

⚡Many are in shock about the deduction and that it has exceeded the value they expected (as per tables published and widely circulated). Read and understand the full extent first 👇🏻

Pay attention to

👉🏻Quantification of Values for Non-Cash Benefits in calculating Employment Income - Circular No. SEC/2022/E/05 [22 December 2022]

👉🏻Guideline for Employers on Deducting Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) From Employment Income - Circular No. SEC/2022/E/04 [22 December 2022]

👉🏻Circular to Withholding Agents (WHA) – Deduction of Withholding Tax and Advance Income Tax - Circular No. SEC/2022/E/03 [23 December 2022]

Know the information always. These are laws and regulations affecting your life, so you must take responsibility for knowing, as well as acting on it as the citizenry. Read first.

Gen Z and millennials are leading 'the big quit' in 2023—why nearly 70% plan to leave their jobs 21/01/2023

Recession, layoffs and the great-quit continues. An interesting read as to why Gen Zs and millennials are still quitting their jobs despite a global recession and redundancies across sectors. Sri Lanka is seeing the biggest brain drain it has experienced since the 80s and perhaps this article may provide some insight into what can be done to the way we to it.

Gen Z and millennials are leading 'the big quit' in 2023—why nearly 70% plan to leave their jobs Even with a possible recession on the horizon, economist Karin Kimbrough expects that younger workers will continue to switch jobs at elevated rates in 2023.

2022 a gift unlike any other.

When 2022 dawned we had all hoped it was a year of recovery. The year that will boost us back to economic growth. But to our disappointment, and as anticipated despite tremendous optimism and in some cases mysticism, 2022 passed as the worst year for Sri Lanka on record in terms of its economic state.

Yet, to this dark cloud of austerity was a silver lining of hope. We seem to have gained in social change, that what we had lost in economic stability. Although we stumbled in the ranks of economics we rose through the ranks in unity to find our voice as a nation.

Despite the economic doom and gloom, 2022 passed as the best year for Sri Lanka on record for our social conscience. Never in the history of our nation had people come together like we witnessed in 2022 to say "No! Enough!" to corruption and malpractice. Never in our history have professionals, industries and every Lankan from all walks of life joined hands setting aside differences to stand as one to voice out and call out bad behaviour, openly and fearlessly.
2022 may have eroded our financial ratings but we certainly can be proud of our unity ratings, our moral ratings, our resilience ratings, if there ever were such measures. A true win for change in our history as a nation.

Every year brings its own unique message visible only in hindsight. What was the message of 2022?

Looking back if I were to sum it up it would be that "change if it must be, starts with me".

There is hope and invincible power in unity, when we unite for the right reasons; when we put values first. Values when lived makes change possible. But for it to be so we must each take and take that step first. Take that risk. Voice out. Step out, without hidden agendas. That is how we build the fragile trust that change and unity requires.

Yes, there is much to be desired in our journey as a nation towards the aspiration of being free of corruption and yes there will be thousands of criticisms on how and how not to get about it. But through it all take a moment to reflect on the change 2022 symbolised.

We are stronger together, when united by values. And yes, Sri Lanka's culture was forever changed in the year of 2022 and the effects of that social revolution will live on for generations, powering and catalysing change.

2022 taught us that we can change the culture of a nation even as a single individual.

It also taught us how our efforts, despite the best of intentions can go wrong if not governed by the right ethos.

While being grateful for all the good that came my way in 2022 I'd ask you to reflect on the message this year has taught us.

2023 will be a tough year and have no illusions about it. Prepare, plan and use the gift 2022 gave us; it's teachings, to learn from and build on.

Stand by your values and don't be afraid to act; only good can come of it. Let this be our foundation in rebuilding Sri Lanka in this new year. Have a great #2023!
