Risso's Dolphin inhabit tropical to temperate waters in all ocean of the world. Although generally found in deep oceanic waters they may also be encountered in coastal water where the continental shelf is narrow. This species was not recorded in Sri Lanka till the 1980s but has since been found to be extremely common. Risso's Dolphins grow to a maximum adult length of approximately 4 meters. This species is very robust in shape with a blunt head and no beak. There is a curious V shaped furrow on the forehead in front of the blowhole. The mouth line slopes upward from the blunt snout. There are 3-7 pairs of teeth in the lower jaw and usually none in the upper jaw. The teeth in the lower jaw are worn down and blunt in most adult animals. The flippers of this species are long and pointed at the tip while the broad flukes have a median notch.

Blue whales have a worldwide distribution, with populations inhabiting all oceans. They are growing to a total length of over 30 meters (>100ft) and attaining a weight of over 160 tons, the blue whale is the largest mammal ever to have inhabited planet earth. While females of the species are slightly larger than males, a newborn calf measures approximately 7 meters. The first recorded blue whale strandings in Sri Lanka occurred in 1932, with two animals being stranded in the months of May and June at thambalagam bay and koddiyar bay respectively in Trincomalee on the east coast of the Sri Lanka
Whales and dolphins are two beautiful marine creatures that have piqued human curiosity and imagination since time immemorial. These ocean-dwelling marine creatures have always been familiar to people (both negatively and positively), and they impressed them because, unlike fish, they are warm-blooded, air-breathing mammals that suckle their young, nourish them on milk, and provide parental care. However, they are unique in that they live their entire lives, from birth to death, in a cold aquatic environment that is alien to terrestrial mammals, including man. We know Sri Lanka is an island, centrally located between latitudes 6โ10 north and longitudes 80โ83 east in the northern Indian Ocean. According to the present state of knowledge on cetaceans in Sri Lanka's territorial waters, 26 species have been identified. This species list is based on the consolidation of data available from sighting records, documented strandings, fisheries catches, and collected species. It is entirely possible that more species will be added to this list in the future as and when new discoveries are made. The observed and identified list is below.

Manatee cousins, dugongs have a similar plump appearance with a tail that resembles a dolphin's fluke. The dugong is solely a marine animal, in contrast to manatees, which inhabit freshwater environments. Dugongs, also referred to as "sea cows," calmly graze on sea grasses in shallow coastal waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Today, information about children and other groups harassing the pilot whales in the Kalpitiya area has been revealed by women on social media. Also, these activities are offenses under the second and third sections of the Animal Cruelty Ordinance. Apart from this, such acts are also offenses under Section 30 of the Animal and Plant Protection Ordinance. In addition to the cruelty to animals, even if we think about the dangers society will face in the future due to such actions, efforts should be made to eradicate such activities whenever possible. Even when pollutants are not dangerous enough to kill animals outright, their presence can have lasting effects on food webs through bioaccumulation and biomagnification.
Toxins may increase in concentration as they passed up the food chain, a process called bioaccumulation.
Pollutant such as polychlorinated biphenyls enter the ocean as industrial waste and absorbed by microscopic phytoplankton at the bottom of the food chain.
Bioaccumulation occurs when pollutant build up in a single organism's body overtime. Mercury, for example is a pollutant that has entered waterways and lakes through industrial processes. Fish and shellfish absorb the mercury directly from their environment and although they may only absorb small amount at a time, the mercury can remain in the fish's body for months or even longer. This leads to the mercury building up or accumulating in the fish's body posing a danger to any organism that eats the fish.
