The Library Research Symposium (LRS) -2023
The Library had successfully conducted its Library Research Symposium-2023 in parallel to the Annual Research Symposium of the University of Colombo on 7th of November 2023. This year the Library marked the Library Research Symposium for the sixth consecutive year under the theme of Libraries for Research Excellence which specifically emphasized on and communicated the role that libraries play in fostering research excellence and the support extended to scholarly endeavors. Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu, Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean Faculty of Arts of the University of Colombo graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The message from the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne via a virtual platform added a glamorous touch to the occasion. The inspiring keynote speech was delivered by Professor AAC Abeysinghe of Faculty of Management & Finance of the University of Colombo. The audience was welcomed by the Chair of the LRS-2023, Ms. Anuja Silva. Consequently, the Acting Librarian of the University of Colombo, Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna shed her thoughts on the significance of Library Research Symposium. The inaugural session concluded by the vote of thanks delivered by the Symposium Convener Mrs. Gayani Perera. A workshop on Capacity Building of Librarians through Research was organized parallel to the LRS-2023 and Emeritus Professor KAP Siddhisena was the resource person. The Library academics presented their findings in two technical sessions chaired by Emeritus Professor KAP Siddhisena & Dr. GR Padmasiri, Librarian of the University of the Visual & Performing Arts. LRS-2023 provided a platform for attendees to engage in thought-provoking discussions, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing.
The University of Colombo Senate Awards for Research Excellence 👏👏
The University of Colombo held its Annual Research Symposium 2023 on November 2nd, 2023, with the theme ''Research Excellence and Beyond'' in the Professor V. K. Samaranayake Auditorium, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). During the event, the Senate Awards for Research Excellence, which recognize outstanding research contributions of academics in the university were awarded, and two general category awards were
presented to Dr. D.C. Kuruppu, Deputy Librarian, and Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna, Senior Assistant Librarian of the University of Colombo, for the year 2022.

The Opening of the CCIS Library Collection at The Library University of Colombo Sri Lanka
The Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies (CCIS) of the University of Colombo transferred its library collection to the Main Library of the University on 16th October 2023. The CCIS is a Centre that promotes research and knowledge on contemporary India and was initiated in 2012 under an MOU between the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka and the University of Colombo.
The collection was officially handed over to the Library by Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo. Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, witnessed the transfer and recorded His Excellency's appreciation. The event was attended by the Deans of Faculties, Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna, the Acting Librarian, Dr U. P. Prasad Serasinghe, the Acting Director of the CCIS, and various staff members.
The collection consists of more than a thousand books in English, Sinhala, and Hindi on various topics such as history, arts, political science, international relations, economics, culture, biographies, and so on. The CCIS collection is available for reference to CCIS researchers and any University of Colombo library user.
The Opening Ceremony of the Indian Corner of the Library, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo
The Opening ceremony of the "Indian Corner" of the Library, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo was held on 5th October 2023. The event commenced with a welcome address from Prof. P.K. Perera, the Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo graced the event as the Chief Guest. The Guest of Honor of the event was Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, Deputy High Commissioner of India. Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna, Acting Librarian, University of Colombo and Mr. K.A.S Edward, Register, University of Colombo, and several academic staff members, administrative staff members, and students of the Faculty attended the event. Over 130 books related to Ayurveda, Indian Culture, and History were donated by the High Commission of India to develop the "Indian Corner" of the Library. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. P. M. Ayomi, Senior Assistant Librarian of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine.
Farewell to Mr. M. A. Milton❤️
Mr. M. A. Milton, who served as a Senior Assistant Librarian at the Main Library, University of Colombo, retired from his service on 30th September 2023. Mr. Milton joined the University of Colombo Library in 2018 as a Senior Assistant Librarian (Grade I). During his six-year tenure at the University of Colombo, he served as the Head of the Cataloguing Division of the Main Library and was temporarily in charge of the Faculty of Nursing Library.
Mr. Milton holds a bachelor's degree in Sinhala as well as a master's degree in Library and Information Sciences from the Universities of Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya, respectively. Before joining the University of Colombo, he served at the National Library and Services Board, the University of Rajarata, and the National Centre for Advanced Studies (NCAS) as well. His career roles as a teacher, lecturer, and librarian have enriched his life with diverse experience in various sectors. In addition, Mr. Milton was involved in various professional associations, such as University Teachers Association and University Librarians Association, and he served as the editor in chief of the “Sri Lanka Journal of Advance Social Studies” which was published by the NCAS from 2011 to 2015.
The Library of the University of Colombo is thankful to Mr. M. A. Milton for the years of his service and dedication. We wish him the best of health, happiness, and success in his new journey in life.
D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize
D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize - General Convocation 2022.
Congratulations to Ms Sachindri Piyahasie Dias from the Faculty of Law for her remarkable achievement in receiving the Open Awards – D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize at the General Convocation 2022. Ms. Dias completed her Bachelor of Laws degree with Second Class Upper Division Honors and is currently serving as a Research Officer to a Supreme Court Judge in Sri Lanka. Since the age of 17, she has been actively involved in various projects related to Special Education. In 2017, she secured a UNDP grant at the iVOICE competition to develop a sign language guidebook, benefitting over 400,000 hearing-impaired Sri Lankans.
Throughout her time at the University, she played a pivotal role as a member of AIESEC, taking on various responsibilities. She served as the Organizing Committee President for Project Archi-Tech and held the position of Research and Development Responsible for a nationwide initiative, positively impacting over 600 undergraduates and children. Additionally, Ms Dias led a successful renovation project at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, earning her the 2020 Emerging Young Leader award from AIESEC, University of Colombo. Her contributions have extended beyond the university, as she has also actively participated in various international and domestic organizations, including the International Water Management Institute.

Canekeratne Prize for General Merit
Canekeratne Prize for General Merit - General Convocation 2022
Congratulations to Mr Harith Lokugamage from the Faculty of Management & Finance for his remarkable achievement in receiving the Open Awards – Canekeratne Prize for General Merit at the General Convocation in 2022. Mr Lokugamage hails from Royal College and has earned a first-class honours degree specializing in Business Economics. He was awarded the Mitsubishi UFJ Scholarship in 2020 for his excellence in academic and extracurricular activities. Mr Lokugamage served as the president of the Amalgamated Club, and under his leadership, the University of Colombo emerged as champions in the Men’s category after a decade, and they were overall runners-up at the Inter-University Games in 2022. During his tenure as president, he played a crucial role in establishing the university's first women’s rugby team and a successful medical clinic for UOC's athletes. He was a formidable ruggerite in the Championship-winning Rugby team at the 13th SLUG and went on to become the Vice Captain of the Rugby team in 2021 and the Captain of the Rugby team in 2022. For his outstanding performance, he received University Colours for Rugby and Weightlifting, as well as Sri Lanka University Colours for Rugby in 2022.
In addition to his achievements in sports and academics, Mr Lokugamage also served as an Executive Committee Member and the Professional Development Director at the Rotaract Club of FMF. He was a Student Coordinator of the Department of Business Economics, a Team Leader in AIESEC UOC, and performed as a rhythm guitarist at university events.

Professor Tilak Hettiarachchy Award for Academic Excellence
Professor Tilak Hettiarachchy Award for Academic Excellence - General Convocation 2022.
Congratulations to Ms Shenali Avishka Ranasinghe from the Faculty of Science for her outstanding achievement in receiving the Open Awards – Professor Tilak Hettiarachchy Award for Academic Excellence at the General Convocation in 2022. Ms Ranasinghe completed her Honours degree in Immunology and Integrative Molecular Biology with an impressive GPA of 3.98/4.00, earning her the gold medal for Best student in the program.
She received the Studentship for Academic Excellence in her first year and consistently made it to the Dean’s list throughout all four academic years. Ms Ranasinghe already has a journal publication in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, a testament to her collaborative work with the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (IBMBB). She has submitted three abstracts to different conferences based on her undergraduate research which was awarded the best project.
Currently, she is actively engaged in preparing her research for journal publication and authoring a book chapter with her supervisors, which will be published by the Faculty of Medicine. In her present role, she serves as an Assistant Lecturer within the Faculty of Science. Looking ahead, Ms Ranasinghe aspires to pursue postgraduate studies in evolutionary genetics, continuing the enthusiasm developed following her undergraduate research on the Sri Lankan aboriginals.

Congratulations to Mr Sanju Dilshan Kumaru Wickramasinghe from the Faculty of Management and Finance for his exceptional achievement in being awarded the Open Awards – Student of the Year at the General Convocation 2022. Mr Wickramasinghe graduated from the Faculty of Management and Finance, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing Management Degree with First-Class Honors. He is an accomplished researcher, with two publications stemming from his undergraduate dissertation and one conference presentation.
In the sports field, Mr Wickramasinghe excelled in Karate, achieving remarkable success at both the National and Inter-university levels. Notable among his achievements are a Gold medal and a Bronze medal at the National Championships organized by the Sri Lanka Karate Foundation in 2022. He was honoured with University Colours in 2019 and 2022, and he was also crowned the Best Player in both of those years. Serving as the captain of the University Karate Team in 2021, he led his team to victory with 16 medals at the National Championships.
In 2022, Mr Wickramasinghe represented all Sri Lankan universities as a student ambassador of the International University Sports Federation, the global governing body of university sports. His talents extend beyond sports, as he is a passionate dancer. In 2022, he initiated a 'Dancing Circle' for university undergraduates and organized an Invitational Inter-faculty Dancing Competition. He has also choreographed and performed dances at various events, proudly representing the University of Colombo.
Mr Wickramasinghe is actively involved in volunteering as well. In his role as Director of the Leo Club of the University, he chaired a project that earned two Leo Awards as the Best Project in the Sports and Recreation Category at both the District and Country levels. Recognizing his multifaceted achievements, Mr Wickramasinghe was also jointly awarded the J.A.S.K. Jayakody Memorial Gold Medal for the Most Outstanding Student of the Year in the Faculty of Management and Finance.

General Convocation 2022
The University of Colombo conducted its General Convocation 2022 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall on the 05th and 06th of September of 2023 under the patronage of the Venerable Chancellor Sasana Keerthi Sri Buddha Sasana Shobhana Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Nayaka Thero, with the presence of the Vice Chancellor- Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne, Rector, Deans, Directors of the Institutes, Registrar, Bursar, Acting Librarian, Academic Staff, Administrative and Finance Officers.
A total of 3151 students were conferred degrees at this Convocation in various study disciplines including Medicine, Health Studies, Science, Law, Arts, Management, Bio-Systems Technology, Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, Nursing ICT, Agro Technology & Rural Sciences, Education, Labour Education, Physiotherapy, Mass Media, Performing Arts and Indigenous Medicine at this most prestigious academic event of the University of Colombo.
The Convocation started with session one on the 05th of September 2023 for the Faculty of Management & Finance followed by the Faculties of Arts (General Degree) Education and IHRA in session two and the Faculty of Arts ( Honours Degree) and Institute Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences on the session Three.
On the 06th of September 2023 started with session Four for the Faculties of Medicine and Technology. Session Five was for the Faculties of Law, Indigenous Medicine and Nursing. Session Six of the 06th of September was for the Sri Palee Campus and the University of Colombo School of Computing. Session seven was for the Faculty of Science. Open Awards 2022 were awarded at the last session on the 06th of September 2023. Fifty-two (52) numbers of University of Colombo Academic Excellence Awards were also awarded at this Convocation.

Donation of the First Publication by the Colombo University Press to the Library 🤝📒🎓
The book titled "A Practical Guide to Basic Networking," authored by Mr. Tharindu Wijethilake, Dr. Chamath Keppitiyagama, Mr. Kenneth Thilakarathna, and Dr Ajantha Atukorale of the University of Colombo School of Computing was donated to the Library by the Colombo University Press on August 24th, 2023. This is the very first publication produced by the Colombo University Press, and it is a proud moment to receive this publication to include in the collection of the Library of the University of Colombo.
Dr. S.T. Nandasara, UOC Press Consultant, along with the authors of the book Mr. Tharindu Wijethilake, Dr. Chamath Keppitiyagama, Mr. Kenneth Thilakarathna, and Dr. Ajantha Atukorale, Director UCSC, officially handed over the publication to Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna, Acting Librarian of the University.
The Colombo University Press has been in operation since February 1st, 2020, and offers its services through a digital printing press. The presses assist with the printing of various items such as books, journals, and newsletters, as well as obtaining ISBNs for university-related publications. The Colombo University Press can be identified as a great opportunity for the university and its staff members to publish quality publications in their research domains.

SLLA Student Training: An Outreach Service by the Library of the University of Colombo 👨🏫
Students of the Diploma in Library and Information Sciences (DLIS) of the Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) had their practical library training at the Library, University of Colombo. The Library of the University of Colombo supports this training every year as an outreach program.
A ten-day program started from August 7th to August 18th, 2023, was designed to provide a comprehensive overview of library operations, library divisions, collections, services, e-resources and databases, and personnel. The academic staff of the library served as the program's resource persons, and students had the opportunity to learn, interact, and get trained in each section of the library during the ten-day training session. Each day, the students had discussions and presentations delivered by the academic staff of the library.
During the training, students were given a unique opportunity to tour and experience the innovative atmosphere of the Faculty of Science Library. The students were delighted by the new technologies and diverse atmosphere at the Science Library, which will complement their regular coursework.
Upon completion of this library training, the students are required to submit a report to the SLLA based on what they observed and learned as a fulfillment of their first-year examination.

A-Day-Out of Library Staff of SEUSL: An Official Visit to The Library University of Colombo Sri Lanka
Mr. M.M. Rifaudeen, the Librarian, along with the library staff of the South-Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) paid a visit to the University of Colombo Library on 20th July 2023 to witness the best practices at the Main Library and cutting-edge technologies at the Science Library of the University of Colombo. The Acting Librarian Mrs. Sajeewanie D. Somaratna warmly welcomed and provided them with an opportunity to experience the modern library facilities at the Science Library and to discover special collections at the Main Library.
The SEUSL Library team first visited the Science Library and explored the novel technologies and facilities being used in the Information & Learning Centre (Science Library). They were intrigued by the concept of the 'Learning Space' and unique elements of services at the Science Library such as the "RFID Self-Check-in/out Machine," Media Unit, and other facilities. The team then visited the Main Library and observed the collections and their arrangements at the Ceylon Room, Periodicals and Research Collections.
The SEUSL team and the staff had a friendly discussion with the senior staff of the Library and exchanged their experiences on library operations and services in their respective libraries. The Librarian of the SEUSL officially thanked the Acting Librarian of the University of Colombo for giving them an opportunity to share the best practices with them during their visit. Library staff of the University of Colombo also enjoyed having interactions with their counterparts from the SEUSL
Establishment of the “Scholars’ Corner” of The Library University of Colombo Sri Lanka
The instigation of the first ever “Scholars’ Corner” in a university library in Sri Lanka has taken place at the Library, University of Colombo on 17th July 2023. The initiative came to fruition by receiving the first generous book donation from Emeritus Professor J.B. Disanayaka, consisting of nearly 300 books related to the Sinhala Language, Art, Literature, History, and Archeology authored by himself.
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Guest of Honour, Emeritus Professor J.B. Disanayaka, and other distinguished guests such as Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr Pradeepa Wijetunge, the Director of the NILIS, Mrs Sajeewanie D. Somaratna, the Acting Librarian, Mr K.A.S. Edward, the Registrar, and Heads of the Departments along with other staff members of the University. Several dignitaries such as university academics, librarians, authors and book publishers, also graced the occasion with their presence.
The audience was welcomed by Mrs Somaratna who explained the objectives and advantages of having a “Scholars’ Corner” at the University Library. Consequently, Professor Sandagomi Coperahewa, the Head of the Department of Sinhala, shed his thoughts on the significance of inaugurating a “Scholars’ Corner” while thanking the Acting Librarian and the staff of the Library for their efforts. Adding more insight into the event, Professor Manawadu also addressed the gathering.
The Chief Guest of the event, Professor Karunaratne appreciated the new initiative and encouraged the Library staff to promote more such good activities in the future, as well. The Guest of Honour of the event, Professor Disanayaka, exchanged fond memories from his past experience, which was very exciting and inspiring to all. The book donation was ceremonially handed over to the Vice-Chancellor and the Acting librarian by Professor Disanayaka. Mrs S.M. Adhikari, Senior Assistant Librarian of the Main Library delivered the concluding remarks with thanks. The inspiration for establishing this type of collection was received from Professor Sandagomi Coperahewa for enabling researchers having easy access to books and monographs published by the eminent scholars of the University by aggregating them in a single location of the Library.
The “Scholars’ Corner” will promote the research and scholarly activities of the researchers of the University while encouraging them to publish more scholarly publications in their respective fields of discipline.

ශ්රී ලංකාවේ විශ්වවිද්යාල ඉතිහාසයේ ප්රථම වතාවට විද්වතුන්ගේ කෘති එක් ස්ථානයකින් ලබාගත හැකි අයුරින් පිහිටුවනු ලැබූ විද්වතුන්ගේ කෘති සංචිත එකතුව (Scholars’ Corner) 2023 ජූලී මස 17වන දින සමාරම්භය සනිටුහන් කළ මොහොත.
සම්මානිත මහාචාර්ය ජේ. බී. දිසානායක සූරීන් විසින් රචිත 300ට අධික කෘති සියල්ලෙන්ම එක් පිටපත බැගින් කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්යාලයීය පුස්තකාලයට පරිත්යාග කිරීමෙන් මෙම ව්යාපෘතිය ආරම්භ කෙරිණි. උපකුලපතිතුමාගේ ප්රධානත්වයෙන් සහ සම්මානිත මහාචාර්ය ජේ. බී. දිසානායක සූරීන්ගේ ගෞරවනීය සහභාගීත්වයෙන් පැවති උත්සව සභාව සහ සුහද හමුව විශ්වවිද්යාලයීය අධ්යයන, පරිපාලන, අනධ්යයන, කාර්ය මණ්ඩල හා විද්යාර්ථීන්ගේ දායකත්වයෙන් අලංකෘත විය.
