Suwandel is heirloom rice variety indigenous to Sri Lanka. It is considered auspicious by the islanders and is prepared as offerings to the gods during festivals and religious ceremonies. Within its rich, milky flavor, the rice is also fortified with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and a much lower Glycaemic Index (GI) compared to other varieties of white rice. Just as this rare rice was used by aristocratic women of yore to foster glowing skin and luscious hair.

Kalu heenati is rich in minerals and micronutrients such as iron and zinc. It is highly recommended for lactating mothers for daily consumption as its nutrition compound is high. It enhances immunity, physical strength, and male s*xual potency. And also its high fiber content helps regulate bowel movement (for example if there is constipation). Kuruluthuda rice (Oryza sativa) comes from a word meaning ‘bird’s beak’, and is a delectable and nutritious red rice variety, rich in proteins and fiber, said to improve bladder function, and proven to have a 25% to 30% lower Glycemic Index (GI) compared other common rice varieties.

It is mostly grown by smallholder farmers in the lowland areas of Sri Lanka through rain-fed cultivation. Organic cultivation can take up to 5-6 months to harvest time. Kuruluthuda rice is best when soaked in water for 20 minutes prior to cooking, and is often boiled with a bit of salt and pandan leaves.
