Sureka Amerasinghe has been a prize-winning musician in 4 instruments since the age of 6. She has been a mentor to many award-winning students, including global prize winners during her 30-year career as an educator. A Fulbright Scholarship helped her study Music in Conflict Resolution in New York. The Centenary Travel Grant British Scholarship gave her the opportunity to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has a Master’s Degree in music from the USA and was invited to be a member of the prestigious and exclusive Pi Kappa Lambda honor society, Rho Chapter, for excellence in music in the United States. She has also won awards for 3 licentiate diplomas in performance and teaching in piano and flute from the UK. Sureka has performed in 16 major cities, and 8 countries, in styles ranging from classical, to jazz and fusion music. She has been a choir and orchestra director for over 25 years and currently directs the LC Orchestra, the LC OGA Choir, and the Royal College Choir.

This special exhibition tour of ‘88 Acres’ by Irushi Tennekoon, will take place exclusively for OGA members.

Irushi Tennekoon is an artist, animator, educator, and published children’s book illustrator. Her animated films have been screened in local and international festivals, winning several awards. She recently graduated with an MA in Animation from the Royal College of Art in London as a Chevening Scholar. More info about Irushi's work: https://irusdedoodles.com/about/

Alongside two practicing architects/filmmakers, Sumedha Kelegama and Sumudu Athukorala, Irushi was commissioned by the MMCA Sri Lanka in 2021 to carry out research and create an artists' film based on architect Minnette De Silva’s Watapuluwa Housing Scheme in Kandy (completed in 1958).

The exhibition tour will highlight some of the key points from this research, some of Minnette De Silva’s experiments with modern architecture in the region, and will end with a screening of the animated artists’ film titled, ‘Is this an architectural documentary?’ (60 minutes | 2023).

The Watapuluwa Housing Scheme in Kandy was completed in 1958, and heralded a new form of social housing in Sri Lanka. Designed by architect Minnette De Silva (1918–1998), the Scheme was notably created with the participation of its users.

The exhibition explores how this sprawling hillside development was ahead of its time in providing affordable accommodation for a diverse ethno-religious community of government public servants in Sri Lanka. ‘88 Acres’ looks back at the Scheme 65 years later to consider De Silva’s influences and the challenges of her design approach.

Anagi Gunasekera was a school prefect for two years, a Loos house committee member and leader of the school English choir, Western Orchestra and Sinhala Orchestra. She was also the president of the Music Circle and Maths Society. She topped her class for 8 years straight and is an Edexcel High achiever, earning 4 A-stars and the world prize for Business in 2023.

Anagi created her capstone project the “Goodville Program” (GP) to teach children (aged 3-8) important core values and socio-emotional skills, with the vision that they will grow up to be civic conscious, benevolent and empathetic adults. GP was recognised nationally at the New Generation Awards 2023, organized by Women in Management and the National Youth Service Council, where it received the “Well Being Award” that “recognizes organizations and individuals who take great care to promote the wellbeing of children and young people, as well as ensuring that families can stay together.” She has currently touched the lives of over 800 children, parents, and teachers through her program and is working on expanding it to reach an international audience.
Anagi is also an award-winning and passionate pianist, violinist and singer. She received the highest distinction mark for her Licentiate exam (LLCM) in piano in 2023. At age 14, she was the youngest top scorer at the ATCL piano diploma exam. In addition, she earned a distinction at her violin ARSM performance diploma.
