21st of November 2023 marked the unfolding of the 79th annual Philex exhibition within the illustrious confines of the Royal College MAS Arena, heralding a momentous chapter in the annals of philatelic history. The event saw the ceremonial revelation of a commemorative stamp, paying homage to a century of occupation at the venerable Reid Avenue. Simultaneously, all eyes were on the stage for the grand introduction of the 36th volume of the Royal Philatelist, and the symbolic presentation of its inaugural copy to Mr. Dharshana Ranatunga. His historical role as a former chairman, instrumental in both launching the inaugural magazine and breathing new life into the Philex exhibition during the 1980s, bestowed a profound layer of significance upon the proceedings. The distinguished presence of Hon. Sagala Ratnayake and Hon. Shantha Bandara served to further accentuate the prestige of this gathering, transforming it into a truly distinguished affair within the captivating realm of philately.

What makes stamps rare?
- The Stamp may br uncommon because it was printed with an error of because it is old and there are not many left. A stamp condition affects it's value. Usually, a stamp that has never been used and is in "Mint" condition is more valuable than the same stamp that has been used.

78th Royal Philex Exhibition
~ South Asia’s oldest philatelic exhibition

Established since 1944.

Photos from Royal College Philatelic Club's post 07/12/2022

The Royal Philex Exhibition is the main event in the calendar of the philatelic club. It has been held every year since its inception in 1944, it is considered the oldest Philatelic exhibition in Asia. The exhibition sees the participation of students from grade 3 to 13, as well as many exhibits created by students of other schools.
The exhibition gives the members the opportunity to use what they have learnt about philately throughout the years and create a meaningful exhibit using their collection of stamps. The best three exhibits of the primary, middle and upper school sections are given specials awards and the best overall exhibit is awarded the most reputed A. W. Panchalingam shield while the winner of the best showcase receives the H.L.B. Gomes shield which was awarded since 2018.

The exhibition has been held since 1944, and in early times the exhibition was just confined to the students of a certain section or a grade. Gradually improving today, it is being held in a very large scale, given the fact that this being the oldest philatelic exhibition is South Asia. At first this was an open exhibition to all students of Royal College. The competition was reformed in the year 2009 where age 3 categories were introduced to this exhibition. Since then, competition is being held under the 3 main categories namely primary, middle and upper sections.

Yet again, this year also we conducted the philex exhibition for the 78th consecutive time.

78th Royal Philex Exhibition was unveiled open to the general public on 1st of December by Hon. Attorney General, President’s Counsel Sanjay Rajarathnam who is a distinguished old Royalist.

The 35th Volume of The Royal Philatelist Magazine which is to be the oldest philatelic magazine in South Asia was firstly presented to the chief guest and principal Mr. R.M.M. Rathnayaka
