Sri Lanka’s Black-necked stork

Have you ever spotted this bright fascinating bird? The black necked stork is a rare beautiful iridescent creature with a dark purple-green neck. They are found in the south coastal areas like Yala and Kumana National Parks as well as in the Northwestern areas of Sri Lanka.

Halcyon Mawella is tucked away in the sunny beachside town of Tangalle, just mere steps away from the Mawella Beach. It is the ideal location to unwind and take in Sri Lanka's beachside beauty. 📍Buduruwagala Rock Temple

The rock temple dating back to the ninth or 10th century. It consists of seven ancient Buddhist figures carved into the face of a large cliff. The name Buduruwagala is derived from the words for Buddha (Budu), images (ruva) and stone (gala). The largest statue measures 51 feet high, making it the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Buduruwagala can be reached from either Wellawaya or Thanamalwila. The 4km track crosses a series of delicate lakes. Keep an eye out for local birdlife, including many egrets and herons!

The ancestral home of Martin Wickramasinghe, a well-known writer and poet from Sri Lanka, who grew up in this house and resided there with his family in Koggala. This family home turned museum, with an abundance of charisma is over 200 years old.

It is said that the Royal Air Force occupied the entire village during the war, and locals were given only 24 hours to leave. While most homes were then destroyed, the complex, which was in the middle of the airfield, caught the attention of a high-ranking female Air Force officer, who stopped the destruction of the home and made it her personal quarters for the duration of the war because of its location in the middle of the airfield and its simple, charming and sturdy structure.

What remains today has been turned into a museum complex that features interesting historic relics, pictures, and awards.

An open air market with a mix of wholesale and retail stores, historical buildings, business institutions, and everything in between. You can find anything you can think of on the streets of Petah and it is one of Sri Lanka's busiest commercial zones.

As you make your way through the maze like streets of this vibrant bazaar amongst the traffic, traders, shops and street food vendors, it is an experience you won’t forget.
