Celebrating a musical icon, the versatile and immensely talented Phil Collins marks his 73rd birthday today. Born on January 30, 1951, in the vibrant city of London, England, Collins has left an indelible mark on the music industry through his prowess as a singer, songwriter, and drummer.
Phil Collins rose to fame as a pivotal member of the renowned rock band Genesis, contributing significantly to their success and shaping their distinctive sound. His journey with Genesis began in the early 1970s, and the band went on to achieve widespread acclaim for their progressive rock compositions. Collins's exceptional drumming skills and unique vocal style played a crucial role in defining the band's identity.

Thirty-nine years ago, in January, 1985, 45 of the biggest names in music, from Stevie Wonder to Bruce Springsteen, came together at a Los Angeles studio to record the charity single “We Are The World” (popular refrain: “We are the children.”)

The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (with arrangements by Michael Omartian) and produced by Quincy Jones for the album We Are the World. The initial shipment of 800,000 "We Are the World" records sold out within three days of release.

The assembled array of talent was pretty incredible and spanned a number of genres, styles, and decades. Belafonte and Ray Charles were something of the elder statesmen. Jackson, Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Diana Ross were among those that came up at Motown in the 60s and early 70s. Bob Dylan was, well, Bob Dylan. Bruce Springsteen, Steve Perry, and Lindsay Buckingham, among others, represented the rock side, for example, while Rogers, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings brought in the country. In all, more than 45 voices are heard on the track, with 21 having identifiable solo bits.
