UNESCO ranks Sigiriya as the 8th Wonder of the World 🌎
Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. It is a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of granite approximately 180 m high.
There's a reason UNESCO ranks Sigiriya as the 8th Wonder of the World and once you see it you'll completely understanding. Sigiriya is a stunning ruins of a castle build atop a tall rock mountain. An engineering marvel, water was piped from the pools at the base of the rock mountain, all the way up to the castle.
Yala National Park is home to an extensive variety of 44 varieties of mammal and over 215 bird species, including at least 7 endemics. Among its more famous residents are the world's biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles.
Yala is one of Sri Lanka's oldest national parks and was designated a wildlife sanctuary as far back as 1900 though it wasn't until 1938 that it was established as a national park.
On safari in Yala National Park we would usually get some good sightings of elephants, at least a few of them. However, Yala is not a national park where one can expect to see elephants in big numbers. Deeper inside the Yala National Park elephants tend to be harder to spot.
