We faced this problem practically. System tests are useful. But not to test the business logic or UI works properly. It’s better use-case is to make sure the system is loading correctly and verifing the usability of the system in a very high level of perscpective. We don’t need loads of system tests. We have to carefully choose what to test in system level.

In a software team, passing the ball is a very bad attitude. Which could make the team distressed. We should care about everyone. We should listen to everyone. And need to solve those people's problems for the correct purpose. That's how we can build great software teams. Building software is a social activity. That's why it's so hard.

How to develop software efficiently.

- The goal? We have a problem. Solve it soon! (End users)
- The solution. We need to show it to everyone and get feedback faster.
- What is a solution? A solution is a set of use cases a system provides to solve a problem.
- The meeting (Domain experts/QA/Dev): Identifying use cases.
- What is a use case? Interaction with the system to achieve a goal. (A part of the solution)
- Use-case contains different scenarios - Primary path (happy), Alternative paths. (unhappy)
- The role of QA - Identifying the primary path and alternative paths.
- Let’s build - The dev team finished implementing solutions for primary and some alternative paths and wrote tests to verify they are working as expected.
- How did you test? You need a UI!
- What is UI? UI receives input to the use-case through the visual interface and represents the use-case output through the visual interface.
- What did you test? We tested use cases.
- But you need the UI to test use cases! Why? It is just a visual interface for the input/output of the use cases.
- But we do have to test the UI anyway! Yes. But it’s slow.
- Any solution? Yes, Let’s defer the UI testing.
- Testing use cases and UI separately. Why? Testing through the UI slows down the feedback loop. We have a fast feedback loop since we are not using it now.
- But we need QA verification! Can they understand what you have written? Yes, they can understand it by reading it. We used Gherkin syntax. (https://lnkd.in/gEYK2R7P))
- While the dev team is implementing the solution QA found some more alternative paths and they have written them using Gherkin syntax.
- Let’s implement them. The dev team implemented the missing alternative paths and executed the test suite. Everything is green!
- Let’s integrate with the UI. The UI/UX team has started designing UIs since beginning using the initial use cases.
- The dev team integrated the use cases with the interface.
- The QA team has done some manual testing. We found bugs! The dev team implemented and automated them.
- We are almost there. Let's show it to the end users and make them happy.
- Everyone is happy. Let’s write some end-to-end tests and make sure everything works as expected.

Two reasons why developers cannot follow Test Driven Development

1. The developer is thinking about his intention first instead of the consumer’s intention
2. The intention of the consumer is abstract/complicated and the developer doesn’t have enough skills to break it into pieces

The more experience you gain, the more you realize how much discipline is needed to build software.
