🍀Aquascaping Guide Part 07🍀

🍂Due to recent requests from our customers about care guides for high value rare aquatic plants we have decided to share our experience along with the knowledge to use our products to maintain these plants in your planted aquariums.

🍂As you are aware most of the sellers don't provide essential information about maintenance and withhold vital information when it comes to essential care. We intend to change that perspective by sharing our experiece as requested by our customers.

🍂🍀Complete Care Guide for Bucephalandra 🍀🍂

🍂Introduction

Bucephalndra is an epiphytic plant that is originated from Borne which grows best between 22 to 28 °C temperature and needs rather high humidity for optimum growth ( >75%)
In Aquariums they prefer low to medium light and increased water column movement that can assimilate the natural habitat of fast flowing streams and are generally slow growing plants. Though CO2 demand is low CO2 injection along with effective water column based nutrition( Liquid Fertilizers) can significantly improve growth rate and coloration. Rhizome with a developed root system are essential for the suvival.

🍂Natural Habitat

In nature bucephalanda grows in areas with flucuations of water levels due to seasonal changes so they are adopted to grow in both emersed and submerged states.

🍂Foliage Coloration

🍀Mature leaves of Submerged plants have an iridescent sheen and may contain small dots with unique coloration of green, blue,purple or red depend on the variety.

🍀In order to experience vivid colors we recommend full spectrum lighting with effective fertilizers with all essential nutrients.

🍀Do not be deceived by reflections on shiny leaves used as a marketing trick and this may give you an illusion or a visual deception of what actually doesn't exist.

🍀It's an effect caused by reflections of lights due to irridescent sheen on bucephalandra leaves.

🍀True colors can be observed under white lights or against a white background outside of aquariums.

🍂Lighting, Filteration and Algae Control

🍀Bucephalanda prefers low to medium light but due to insufficient filteration and weak water column movement it can result in Staghorn and Blackbeard Algae. As it is difficult to get rid of such algae you can consider cutting off affected leaves and we don't recommend algaecide approach because it can affect other aquatic plants and inhabirants in a negative manner.

🍀When it's comes to algae, prevention is better than cure. Minimize chances of occurence and don't buy submerged plants infested with algae.Observe leaf margins for any signs of BBA or staghorn algae in early stages.

🍀Occurence of algae is high on aquariums with no CO2 injection, Weak filteration and water column movement and low maintenance and insufficient water column based nutrition.

🍀If you insist on using algaecides we recommend mild algaecides like 3% H2O2 and use a different aquarium for treatments. Turn off the filter and use a syringe to apply algaecides on affected areas. Do a water change of at least 25% after 30 minutes of treatment.

🍀Green spot algae is another common issue that can be solved with proper water column nutrition as it indicates certain nutrient difficiencies. After all you can choose algae eaters that consume perticular algae. ( Refer to our guide about algae)

🍀Use a combination of algae eaters.
Shrimps - Amano/ Red nose shrimp
Nerite Snails
Dwarf Plecos/ Garra
Ottocinclus catfish
Siamese algae eater

🍀In order to minimize the risk we recommend you quarantine the plants before adding to your aquarium or buy from a trustworthy seller.

🍂Placement

🍀Since Bucephalanda are epiphtic plants it's important that you don't bury the rhizome on substrate and attach it on a rock or a driftwood.

🍀Place in an area which has a moderate water column movement where you can observe a gentle sway of leaves and not a strong flow which can damage leaves

🍀If you place is it in an area with stagnent water or low water column movement it can result in algae formation due to slow growth. Pay close attention when you buy bucephalandra to observe leaf surfaces and margins for any signs of algae.

🍂Water Parameters, Nutrition and Maintenance

🍀pH range of 6 to 8 is recommended but pH around 6.5 is ideal for nutrient absorption from water column. ( Refer to Our Guide on Water column nutrition)
You don't require aquasoil to buffer pH if you are using CO2 injection as it lowers pH and you can easily maintain pH between 6 to 6.5. Since Bucephalanda don't need a substrate don't waste your resources on substrate based nutrition.

🍀Some people may notice melting of leaves and this is due to fluctuations of water parameters. We recommend maintaining TDS between 100 to 150 for submerged plants.
Perform weekly water changes of at least 30%.

🍀Siphon out organic matter using a gravel vaccum to prevent accumilation of organic debries ( Deteriorating/ Decaying leaves, Fish waste etc) and be alert on additives or products that can add organic waste. Don't take unnecessory risks.

🍀Using a fertilizer with all essential nutrients can maintain a safe range of TDS. One of the main reasons why we have implemented daily dosing methods compared to weekly dosing methods. Weekly dosing method can accumilate excess nutrients in water columns.

🍂Commercial Propergation

🍀Most people prefer emersed growth due to low cost of maintenance but temperature and relative humidity must be maintained in safe range and fungal infections are common in high temperature and humidity and if you don't use a sterile media.

🍀For emersed growth we recommend hydrophonic approach or a foliage spray. Our fertilizers can be used for hydroponic media and as foliage spray. Note that we have tested our fertilizers on hydropnic / foliage spray/ Aquascaping hence the only multipurpose fertilizer option available.

🍀You have to maintain semi aquatic plants within the humidity dome either using a flood and drain method to aerate roots or consider aerating hydroponic media and use automated sprinklers.

🍀Growth in submerged state is bit faster due to acess to atmospheric CO2 but with a CO2 injection in water column you can easily achieve this.

🍀Emersed bucephalanda may not show the irridescent sheen with vivid coloration so in order to get the ideal foliage coloration and identify the species we recommend submerged plants has a rhizome with strong root system
⚠️Caution - If you get trimmings without developed root systems there is a huge risk of melting the leaves along with the rhizome. Some of you may have already experienced this.

🍀If you study the international market you can clearly observe that submerged plants with attractive foliage coloration are more expensive than emersed plants.

🍀We are trying to implent on micropropagation methods like tissue culture but most easy method would be the rhizome cuttings. Make sure it has at least 5 to 6 leaves and when you cut the rhizome. Cutting an immature soft rhozomes leads to melthing of the trimmed section in most cases due to damage to rhizome and it's prone to infections from a contaminated media. ( Must be done under sterile conditions)

🍂Before you buy

🍂Ask your seller about pH and TDS if they are submerged plants and make sure rhizome is with a developed root system.

🍂Plants infested with BBA and Staghorn algae must be avoided since they are extremely difficult to get rid of.

🍂Obtain experience by growing similar epiphytic plants with low economic value ( Ex- Anubias) This will provide experience for challenges ahead.

🍂Be ready to commit your time and resources for essential maintenance. Though these are hardy plants basic care should not be avoided.

🍂Invest in a pressurized CO2 system and a reliable fertilizer and a full spectrum light system and avoid cheap ineffective alternatives if you plan on keeping exotic varieties with high economic values.
