Another fun project!

As a kid, I have always been obsessed with games

Now that I don't play them much we got the opportunity to redesign a gaming platform similar to Roblox.

Though the development is still underway the design is fully completed and I have shared my experience where I have addressed the old designs 2 problems which were,

1. Outdated design
2. Confused navigation

The link to the case study - https://www.behance.net/gallery/139919727/Gaming-Platform-Redesign?
As always, any feedback is much appreciated.

This was a fun project.
I decided to redesign Medium's settings page.
It wasn't planned until I was gonna post something on Medium.
Link to the full case study

I will be talking about how Medium could have used
1. Familiarity Bias
2. Mental Models
To their advantage.

As always, any feedback/criticism is much appreciated!

“Too many = Too daunting”

There is a misconception that users come to your website to read (Unless it’s a blog).

Most of the time users scan and find what they need and leave!

Extra words take a lot of space.

Extra words can suggest that you need to read the whole lot to understand what’s going on!

In the end, too many words make the page too daunting!

My suggestion - Remove half of the words and see whether the text gives what it was intended to give.

“Good Design Saves Time”
It’s important to decide the goals of the website especially the goals of the user when they visit a certain page.

Users obtain information from a page based on the task/goal that's in their minds.

Good design can make their task much easier. Users focus on elements that are only necessary to their task/goal.

Some tips
1. Be consistent in the layout of design elements/avoid too much variation
2. Use whitespace, scaling, and sizing to make the design clean and clutter-free.
3. Use words that are short and recognizable

“Using Tension to Grab Attention!”

I know it’s a killer heading for a post :D

Tension or imbalance in design is something that is used to grab the attention of the user.

As you see in the design I have made the image asymmetrical by just moving one of its vertices a bit to the left.

This is important in situations where you might feel the user might ignore the element and scroll down (Which they almost do all the time!)

“Perfectionism Kills”

Recently I saw a post from friend which matches the analogy of battery charging to perfectionism.

The post sparked a memory about an article I read. It was a small study done by Jerry Uelsmann, a professor at the University of Florida.

He divided his film photography students into two groups.

Group 1 - The quantity group. They focused on taking as much as photos/films as possible and would be graded on the quantity

Group 2 - The quality group. They focused on taking the best quality images and would be graded on the quality. They would only take one image per semester

Results were surprising the professor found that all the best photos were produced by the quantity group.

Simply, due to the fact that they were taking more photos and experimenting with composition and lighting, testing out various methods in the darkroom, and learning from their mistakes.

Another example would be Pablo Picasso who created around 50,000 arts during his lifetime but, we only know a few of them.

Lesson? Create stuff. Get Feedback. Learn from your mistakes and improve!

“Applying Design Principles Practically”

This is how a blank canvas is made to a design that’s pleasing (In my POV). I have used principles such as scaling, sizing, contrast, and overlapping to make this design.
As always any feedback is much appreciated.

I just tried to copy Razorpay design’s hero section on Webflow.

Took me some time but I did learn a lot and I believe this is how everyone should learn skills after getting to know the basics.

I am curious, what’s your process to learning something new?

“Figma is a game-changer”

I have been using Figma since the beginning of my career and it has never failed to disappoint me.

As a designer, it’s necessary to convey our ideas to the developer.

Here’s a simple example of how Figma can help.

This is a feature where we can show states of buttons the best part is it took only 15 minutes to build.

Renaming so that confusion is avoided is important.

“Copying others”

How can someone improve their visual designs?

This was something I was wondering when I got started in web design.

The simple answer is to copy other designs.

Yes, you can study all that is about design but you have to apply them.

The easiest way to get started is to copy any design you find on the internet.

It helps you practice your eye for design and also the principles of visual design.

The best part is, it doesn’t take much of your time!

“No code design in WordPress”

I don’t have a design background.

I started my freelancing journey building WordPress websites but, most websites were generic and had the template feel which I was not a fan of!

That’s when I switched to using Elementor to build custom-designed websites.

Here is a video demonstrating how I designed a layout (Which is crap) and developed it on WordPress.

How has WordPress helped you as a designer?

Hero Redesign

Took 30 minutes out of time to redesign the hero section of https://ansafone.com/.
First, there were a number of elements to focus on. This takes a toll on the cognitive load a normal human has.
I increased the whitespace and reduced/compressed some elements in the hero and navigation bar
I believe the headline talks more about them as a company and not about a value proposition to their user.
Added some certificates that were way bottom in the page to the top to show their expertise.
Smiling human makes any human feel good. The person in the image directly points towards the headline thus guiding the user.

"Apples Style Grid"

This was inspired by the recent iPhone 13 event

This demonstrates how useful grids can be along with the "magical" divblock. Used images as a cover and as a background to develop this

Any feedback is much appreciated

A client needed their pricing page redesigned. This took me around 3 hours to complete.

As the company's target audience was business owners, the outcome of the design should be professional and to the point.

The client mostly emphasized the design of the pricing chart to be different as the current design was taking a lot of space.

I used tabs to display pricing plans based on yearly and monthly payments.

The buy now button would direct them to a page with extra details on the package.

I always start with taking screenshots of websites for inspiration and pasting them on my Figma canvas. This gives me a good view of what direction I need to take while designing.

What did I miss? Let me know in the comments

“The 5 dollar website”

Part 2

The website design process is not easy, not easy for the one's who make it for a buck.
That's why we say we should fall in love with the process!
This is me trying to find inspiration and as always the pen and paper is a must have!

"Webflow challenge"

This is something I was planning to do.
Cloning certain animations to webflow.
Here we see a simple looping animation but the tricky part was to animate all the elements so it moved equally.
There were 3 sets of movement as I noticed. So I divided them into 3 classes and applied the animations to each class.

I am curious, How would you do it?

“A simple practice”

As a designer, It is necessary to keep your skills sharp.
Fakeclientspro is a website I got to know through a YouTube video.

As the name suggests this website provides fake client briefs.
You can select categories ranging from logo design to UX design.

My challenge was to build something in under one hour as per the brief.

Practice makes you perfect.
Let me know how you practice to stay at the top of your game!

“White Space - The designer’s best friend”

This is one of the basics you learn as a designer in general

No, I am not gonna teach you about whitespace for designs.
White space, as important it is to your designs, it is important to your schedule as well.

White space helps a user focus on what’s important and gives the elements space to breathe. The same applies to you!

Take a short break, leave your usual work area for about an hour or two. Do something that is not related to your work. Not every day but at least once a week!

For me, it’s going on a ride or just staring at nature for as long as I can.

The benefit? Creative rejuvenation!

How do you use white space in your life?
