On January 30, 2024, the KDU Metro campus saw the launch of an undergraduate degree programme for the first time in its history. Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, officially inaugurated the Faculty of Technology's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree programme at the KDU metropolitan campus.
The KDU metro campus, formerly referred to as the Miloda Academy of Financial Studies, is among the most beneficial additions to the institution. Thus, it was historic when an undergraduate degree programme was established on the Metro campus. Since its inception, the ICT programme has been implemented at the KDU Sooriyawewa campus. The relocation was executed with the consent of students and their guardians in order to maximise KDU facilities and provide students with greater industrial exposure.
The rector of the metropolitan campus, Air Commodore Rajinth Jayawarde USP MSc MDS MSSD BA ndc psc welcomed the vice chancellor and all the other guests and highlighted the significance of the event in his welcome speech.
The Vice-Chancellor stated in his address that there will be differences between the southern campus and the metropolitan campus in terms of the facilities and opportunities available. Yet he said the doors of the Ratmalana campus are open for students to come and use the facilities available to them. He went on to state that, with the relocation of the programme to the commercial capital of the country, programme is strategically positioned to foster closer ties with industries and businesses, providing invaluable networking and training opportunities for students.
Prof. Prasanna Premadasa, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, delivered the thank-you speech and thanked the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence and Administration), and the Rector Metro Campus for their assistance and taking the strategic decision to relocate the ICT programme from Sooriyawewa to the Meto campus.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence & Administration), Brigadier DCA Wickramasinghe, USP USACGSC, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. KAS Dhammika, and Rector of Kurunagala Campus, Commodore SR Roopasena Rwp Rsp psc.
The event concluded with a networking session and refreshments, allowing students to engage with senior officials of the university.

On January 19, 2023, four students from the Faculty of Technology of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University visited the computer numerical control (CNC) machine and precision milling lab of the Faculty of Technology of Sabaragamuwa University to explore the potential applications of these tools in their projects. The visit was organised with the blessing of Professor KR Koswattage, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology at Sabaragamuwa University.
Mr. Amalka Idupama who is a senior lecturer, has demonstrated the various capabilities of the CNC machines to the visiting students. He showed them how the equipment can be used for creating intricate parts with tight tolerances. The students were particularly interested in how CNC machines could be used to create complex, three-dimensional shapes with extreme accuracy.
The Faculty of Technology of KDU extends its gratitude to Sabaragamuwa University for this valuable educational opportunity. This collaboration between universities is a significant step in enhancing the practical knowledge of students who are poised to enter the engineering industry. It also highlights the importance of academic institutions working together to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
FOT: KDU is thankful for the warm hospitality and the enlightening experience at Sabaragamuwa University. We are confident that this visit marks the beginning of a fruitful relationship, and we look forward to the promising collaborations that lie ahead.
