ELAB is a well-equipped simulation center hospital-like environment with high-fidelity manikins.
The ELAB – CTLI’s clinical simulation education program – trains clinicians to competently and confidently provide patient care through the use of lifelike manikins and other training tools to mimic different clinical scenarios. ELAB’s facilities at JFK Medical Center and University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill campus will allow learners to practice both basic procedural skills (IV insertion, cathete
Integration of simulation into the residency program was launched after months of planning with the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons and the JFKMC.
The integration serves as a boost to the residency program, as research has shown that simulation training helps residents practice and perform basic to advanced skills and behaviors they need with a high level of accuracy before they step into a real-life clinical scenario. Continued engagement of the core specialties integration process is ongoing. The ELAB currently offers Pre-service training for medical school and TNIMA, trained 198 unique learners in 180 sessions, and has trained 49 faculty.
Camp xSEL is a month-long vacation camp for 11th and 12th grade students interested in the health sciences. The camp aims to strengthen the pipeline for medical education by increasing science and math knowledge, building soft skills, and improving readiness for higher education in health sciences. In addition to classes taught by University of Liberia, students engage in critical thinking labs, career talks, health workshops, and extracurricular activities led by senior health science students, including debates, quizzes, sports, and talent shows.
Today at Camp xSEL 2024, Montserrado Camp focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness. The workshop, led by Mr. Isaac Dolo, Senior Coordinator of ELAB, provided crucial insights to campers, empowering them to make informed decisions regarding their s*xual and reproductive health. Key topics included STIs/STDs and preventive measures, family planning methods, menstruation and teenage pregnancy, reproductive health, gender and s*x, and the importance of consent.
Today, the Montserrado Camp 11th graders visited the Samuel Bowman Experimental Learning and Assessment Laboratory (ELAB) at the JFK.
The campers were amazed as they were introduced to Liberia’s only high-fidelity simulation laboratory. A session was led by Mr. Isaac Dolo, Senior Coordinator of ELAB, on the importance of simulation in Liberia through a practical experiment and discussion using SimMan and other manikins.
Campers also had a historical tour of Providence Island, visited the monument of Liberia’s first president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts, and made a stop at the Unification Park.
