On July 25, we honored an invitation from Smiles Foundation founder Asatu Abigail Tuss Toure to speak at the Pre Independence General conference on the topic: “Peer Pressure “.

We were able to shared our practical experiences , how peer pressure had influenced us both positively and negatively .

Peer pressure is the process by which members of the same social group influence other members to do things that they may be resistant to, or might not otherwise choose to do.

Peers are people who are part of the same social group, so the term "peer pressure" refers to the influence that peers can have on each other.
We also when throw light on social media peer pressure. The fear of missing out (FOMO) plays a significant role in social media-induced peer pressure.
Teenagers constantly see their friends or acquaintances engaging in exciting activities or attending events that they are not a part of.
This fear of missing out on social experiences can create a sense of urgency to confirm and participate in activities they may not be comfortable with or that go against their values.

Depression, anxiety and social pressure are the new challenge, thriving off social media and their increasing adoption as normal parts of our lives. From scrolling through and viewing edited pictures and unabashed ; this has caused and sent many young millennials into serious mental health challenges. They live with low self-esteem concerns and go out of their way to outdo each other in the hustle for social media likes and recognition.

There were points we presented about how to overcome “Peer pressure “, and they’re listed below 👇
Dealing with peer pressure can be really difficult, but below are some ways to help you make wise choices that will affect your career, and life positively.

1. Consciously refuse to compare yourself with others
Self-comparison is one of the biggest factors that lead to low self-esteem and socially induced depression. As humans, not only do we consciously and unconsciously feel the need to be validated, we also want to compare our success with what other people are doing.

2. Measuring your success by your own goals
Ask yourself, “What do I want to achieve with this? What are my goals?” When you find the answers, commit yourself to work towards achieving the identified goals.
3. Be prayerful
4. Say no to some offers
5. Set some non -negotiables
6 Find peers who share similar interests and values.
7. Give excuses when you’re forced or bullied to do things against your will.
