Revamping Africa’s Education for Sustainable Development: Private Sector Perspective

Paper presented at the International Conference of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Nigeria

By Dr. BENJAMIN YELE WEHYE President, National Association of Private School Owners of Liberia, President, LICOSESS College of Education.

December 2 2022.

Abstract

Educational institutions in Africa were borne out of the need for the continent to supply a workforce for both the public and private sectors to grow and sustain the economy. The University of Liberia (UL) founded 1862 and the University of Ibadan (UI) founded 1948 were both established to fulfill this mandate. The question that led to this inquiry is: Have they achieved their objective? Just before suggesting means to ‘revamp’ Africa’s education system, let us first identify how our individual systems have been ‘vamped’ and what it has produced over time- underdevelopment, development, sustainable development or unsustainable development?

Evidence shows that the educational system in Liberia has been designed to contribute to underdevelopment for the last 175 years since the country's independence in 1847. The country is ranked 175 out of 189 countries and territories using HDI indicators. The founding elitist norms, combined with conflict theory and functionalism, motivated by the protracted years of slavery and neo-slavery, continued to contribute to Liberia's underdevelopment. In other words, those who have been marginalized through the use of servitude norms rose to become oppressors, using the educational system as a means to achieve this goal. This has led to a vicious circle whereby the “giant killer becomes the giant” and the method of the dominant culture becomes the way of the oppressed, responsible for expunging progress. Like Liberia, many African systems are steeped in colonial vassal patterns that continue to undermine sustainable development.

To eliminate the hidden discriminatory standards that have undermined sustainable development, the document recommends strong collaboration between African indigenous researchers and political and technical stakeholders. Indigenous researchers from African universities should pool their resources to conduct research and develop counter-practices with respect to discriminatory political, economic, historical, cultural and social movements. This is required because research has shown that historical and philosophical foundations have their own way of establishing a class system, such as colonial education.

Political actors should be prepared to include scholarly recommendations in the development of educational policies and to provide the resources and willingness to implement such policies. Technical actors should play a neutral role in the implementation of evidence-based policies to prevent the regeneration of harmful standards. Finally, the need for reskilling to aid the current workforce meet the changing strains of the industry by reducing focus on the traditional formal educational tract and engender a paradigm shift towards the acquisition of skills that add value to the human person, developing, adopting and integrating the informal sector into standardized curriculums is essential at this time........full Paper to be published Soon.....
