YOUNG EUROPEAN INNOVATION FUND: DIGITAL NEWS FORMATS

We are looking for innovative digital video content formats to fund with up to €15,000 each to turn them into a reality.

These projects should create innovative and easily replicable digital video formats for young European audiences, addressing issues they care about, on platforms they use for news consumption. It could be TikTok, Snap, WhatsApp, YouTube shorts, X, Instagram, Discord, Reddit or anywhere you think that young people are and that high quality news information could be supplied in new, creative, accurate and interesting ways.

This project is part of a wider European Union awarded to ENEX to promote high-quality news information sharing in the EU.

The team at ENEX is deeply saddened to pass on the news that long-time colleague and friend Jan de Boer has died suddenly.

Jan had been at RTL4 in the Netherlands since 1989 and was ENEX coordinator from soon after the organisation’s creation.

His death, even more tragically, came just days before his official retirement date from RTL4. It is understood he suffered a heart attack

At his recent retirement party he spoke of his proud connection to ENEX and of his role in helping the organisation grow into the worldwide organisation it is today.

Many of you will have had dealings with Jan over the past years and many of you will have enjoyed his legendary enthusiasm and sense of fun at our annual coordinators’ get-togethers.

We will miss him greatly and pass on our thoughts to his family and RTL colleagues.

ENEX is launching new social media friendly formats on our website and NEP distribution platform. The content uses punchy, memorable video clips in under a minute that will resonate with digital audiences. Each story comes in in horizontal, vertical, and square versions so that it is optimized for social and digital platforms including Insta, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and websites. We’re calling the format ‘social edits’ and they’re designed to empower newsrooms with digital ready video.

The social edits can be found under the tabs ENEX Social Edit and Web Ready and their titles will all begin SOCIAL EDIT. There’s a quick filter button on the webpage to take you to the content:

To begin with we’ll focus on stories from Europe or of interest to European audiences as the project is part of ENEX’s Create and Exchange initiative. We’ll publish about 25 individual stories per week and the videos will be incorporated into the ENEX platform along with our existing video offer. As this work is new, we are committed to continuous refinement, and we want to learn from your experience. We’ll be experimenting with the formats as we go and after a month we’ll reach out to gather your insights through a feedback survey.

One ENEX’s longest serving collaborators, Jan De Boer, is retiring this week after a 34 year career at RTL Netherlands. Jan has been a lynchpin of ENEX’s editorial meetings and ensured ENEX members have received many headline stories like the downing of MH17, war crimes tribunals and Dutch politics. Things just won’t be the same without him!

ENEX Technical Committee brought together the technology leaders from global commercial TV stations in Salzburg, Austria on May 4th and 5th, 2023. Over 50 ENEX partners met at the Bulls Corner at the Red Bull Arena, home of FC Red Bull Salzburg coming from Mexico to Kurdistan.

The conference started with the welcome from the organizers from Servus TV and Red Bull Media House, both part of the Red Bull. Servus TV is the leading commercial TV station in Austria with a wide a range of activities in the Austrian broadcast landscape. Red Bull Media House provides world class global video production for the Red Bull brand.

During the event the discussion on the Technology trends panel brought together Hans Martin Paar, News Director Servus TV, Fabian Dorschel, Global Head of Media Techology & IT Red Bull, Frederic Bochart, Director of Technology RTL Belgium, and Martin Boronski, CTO BCE, and raised some question about the future of broadcasting.

Gerry Collins, Director of Product Management Mobile Networks from Intelsat provided more information on the interesting topic of how 5G, IP and Satellite are converging to give us a seamless network for contribution and distribution of our stories and signals.

CEO of Fonn Group, Haarvard Myklebust gave us some industry insights as the leading software developer for newsroom production systems.

Our partner 1+1 from Ukraine closed the conference with their impressive presentation on how they are using Starlink terminals to cover the frontline, but also all other news in Ukraine. They see it as very resilient and reliable and are sure it will improve with more satellites in orbit. Ukrainian media received the terminals for free and is not paying any service fees.

ENEX visits one of our most diverse partners Servus TV in Salzburg, Austria. Servus is part of the Red Bull media group and ENEX is also proud to host video from the Red Bull Content Pool. ENEX has held its General Assembly in Abu Dhabi November 15-17 with digital media integration as its key theme. Geert Deawale, Head of News City Creative, DPG Media, presented their project to build a coordinated media business across all platforms which serves the Flemish speaking audience in Belgium. DPG’s Headquarters, based in Antwerp, incorporates tradtional print and magazines combined with broadcast (VTM), digital streaming, radio, podcasting, sports and business outputs. Journalists retain core skills but also contribute freely to other outlets.

65 delegates attended the meeting which was held at the same time as the United Arab Emirates’ Global Media Congress. ENEX has a strong footprint in The Gulf and wider Middle East. ENEX's Middle East partner, Al Arabiya, hosted a panel looking at the dramatic change in positive relations between Israel and the Gulf region. Our Ukrainian partner, 1+1 Media thanked all partners for their support during the continuing conflict. RTL Netherlands’ Deputy Editor in Chief, Dennis Van Luling, presented on their channel’s commitment to investigative reporting and editorial integrity.

ENEX Managing Director, Adrian Wells, said: ‘’We have European roots but ENEX has now grown into a global news agency and it is important that we meet in different parts of the world to cement our different relationships. Next year though, we are 30 years old and we’ll celebrate that by meeting at ground zero of our founding – Luxembourg.’’

ENEX's Head of News, Mark Evans looks back on The Queen's funeral: ''Even for a hardened hack such as myself, it was a moment to bring a lump to the throat. As the sound of pipers and drummers filled the streets of Westminster, and the crown-topped coffin of Queen Elizabeth II rolled into view, all those fortunate enough to be looking on realised we were witnessing a moment for the history books. I was at Westminster Abbey to serve the needs of ENEX’s many partners around the globe, gathered in London for the funeral of probably the world’s most widely-recognised head of state. We provided live correspondent stand-ups for more than a dozen partners, from five different locations, including Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. There was week-long HD coverage of every official event, vigils, walkabouts and parades, up to and including the full funeral service itself. All this, the result of furiously hard-working teams in Luxembourg and London and the great help of our partners at Sky News UK. It had been years in the planning, caused many a sleepless night and bitten fingernail. Now it’s over. All that’s left is to make sure you sign up for the Coronation of Charles III. History never ends.

ENEX has lost one of its dearest friends and colleagues with the sad passing of Mieke Asselberghs. Mieke, who was 47, worked for VTM News, Belgium for more than 20 years and was a regular and popular attendee of many meetings at partner stations. ENEX is donating to the child organ transplant fund which Mieke nominated for which we have details. We'll miss you Mieke 😢

ENEX’s Executive Committee met at the Headquarters of DPG Media and VTM News in Antwerp, Belgium. DPG has created a truly cross platform, integrated multi-media facility which spans newspaper, magazines, radio, TV, digital and social. The meeting was also joined virtually by CBS from London, TVN from Warsaw and Caracol from Colombia.

ENEX is meeting at RTL Television in Cologne with all its news partners discussing Ukraine, communication and digital news. Physical is back! Meeting is better than zoom.
