Let's be honest. For some of us - rum lovers, there is a negative narrative about Plantation rums. But this specific release broke all your bad expectations from this brand, if you are ready to try 76.8% ABV!
Plantation is a very big brand, with huge amounts of production, from a basic range for people who only start to try Rum like the category itself, but also there are interesting variations for more demanding customers.
Plantation are like the Volkswagen group from the car manufacturing world, which offers you from VW Polo to Porsche or even Lamborghini.
What could I recommend from the basic range?
I will prefer Guatemala&Belize (blue box)
Next step is the Vintage series, where you can find more intense and higher ABV releases. And then single cask series, which are not literally always ‘single cask’, but this is the swimming pool where you can find very interesting releases with extraordinary maturation. For example rum which are aged in ex-beer cask or tequila. Probably you will not buy one more bottle of this experiment’s , but you will agree it's enough to capture your attention and try it once at least.
But let's push the red button and take a pour of this fantastic “flamethrower”.
This Plantation single cask 1993 Jamaica comes from Long Pond distillery, which you may know mostly like high ester rum distillery. Add to this 26! years in ex-bourbon cask, and an even more important fact is that this specific release are tropical aged rum. Almost. One more year in boooring Europe in ‘must have’ cognac cask from Maison Ferrand. Job done.
76,8! Is it legal? Are you really goin’ to drink it neat?!
In the normal spirits world, even not only in rum production, ‘usually average’ ABV before you put your spirit into cask is about 63,5~. Experienced people will tell you “that is optimal proof for maturation in oak casks”. Sometimes depending on temperature and humidity level and other factors you have an interesting experience where ABV could even increase from year to year, but I’m not sure this is the right case in this situation. I will guess: few guys from Long Pond just have a good idea “oh, dude, lets just fill it with the original ABV and see what happens”. And something really good comes alive after 27 years. Where was you 27 years ago?
Taste is a very subjective thing, but in my opinion this release is the best from Plantation which we have a chance to open and taste this year. Good work!
