artisansdumaroc One of the highlights from my recent trip to Zagoura was spending time with local artisans and
watching them as they crafted everyday household objects
by hand
Rachid has been a potter for over 10years. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were potters as too are his
sons. A craft and tradition that has been in his family for
generations.
The practice of using traditional methods and techniques to
craft objects from natural materials is learned, practiced and
refined across Morocco. For many artisans their craft is so
much more than just a job, it's their way of life

Street art is a city's outdoor museum. Not just attractive to look at, it often functions as a gateway into the underlying social, cultural, or political concerns of the setting in which it appears. While it is easy, upon coming across a beautiful work of art on a city’s wall, to simply snap a photo, upload it to Instagram and move on, the best street art merits spending a few moments to think about what it wants to say. Here we take you on a tour for seeking Morocco street art with a conscience.

mausoleum is an external free-standing building constructed as a monument enclosing the interment space or burial chamber of a deceased person or people. A monument without the interment is a cenotaph. A mausoleum may be considered a type of tomb, or the tomb may be considered to be within the mausoleum.

The Djinguereber Mosque (French: Mosquée Djingareyber) in Timbuktu, Mali is a famous learning center of Mali built in 1327, and cited as Djingareyber or Djingarey Ber in various languages. Its design is accredited to Abu Es Haq es Saheli who was paid 200 kg (40,000 mithqals) of gold by Musa I of Mali, emperor of the Mali Empire. According to Ibn Khaldun, one of the best known sources for 14th century Mali, al-Sahili was given 12,000 mithkals of gold dust for his designing and building of the djinguereber in Timbuktu. But more reasoned analysis suggests that his role, if any, was quite limited. The architectural crafts in Granada had reached their zenith by the fourteenth century, and it is extremely unlikely that a cultured and wealthy poet would have had anything more than a dilettante's knowledge of the intricacies of contemporary architectural practice.[1]

The word "Gnawa", plural of "Gnawi", is taken to be derived from the Hausa-Fulani demonym "Kanawa" for the residents of Kano, the capital of the Hausa-Fulani Emirate, which was under Morocco influence (Opinion of Essaouira Gnawa Maalems, Maalem Sadiq, Abdallah Guinia, and many others). The Moroccan language often replaces "K" with "G", which is how the Kanawa, or Hausa people, were called Gnawa in Morocco. The history of the Gnawi is closely related to the famous Moroccan royal "Black Guard", which became today the Royal Guard of Morocco.

Namaste from India to Nepal
While you might hear the phrase “namaste” accompanied by a mudra (gesture) of upward-pointing, pressed-together palms, in Western pop culture it’s often stripped of its cultural context and inappropriately used. These days, the term is unceremoniously plastered on tote bags and T-shirts and uttered at the end of beer yoga classes, worlds away from its ancient spiritual origins. “The history [of the gesture] dates back several thousands of years,” says Divya L. Selvakumar, a Hindu Indian American with familial origins in Tamil Nadu, and the founder of the American Hindu World Service. “It is mentioned in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas [important Hindu texts].” The Sanskrit term translates to “bend or bow to you,” and so, Selvakumar says, “a person bows [the head] slightly when doing namaste to another person to signify ‘the Divine within me bows to the same Divine within you.’ It is considered to be a sign of respect and gratitude.”
