Nepo is the 2023 Challenger ✨

Ian Nepomniachtchi had a solid start at the Candidates, took advantage of every winning opportunity, and defended a couple of tough positions successfully. As many commentators acknowledged, Nepo’s performance was a great one, but that wasn’t because the Russian GM played brilliantly, but the other GMs didn’t play exemplary. As a result, Nepo looked like he was cruising the tournament achieving an impressive score of 8.5/12 with 5 wins, and a 2792 live rating.

In Round 13, the Russian GM played against Richard Rapport. “He is a true superstar and will definitely try to make Nepo’s life a struggle” GM Daniil Yuffa said during the broadcast. The Hungarian initiated the Taimanov Sicilian with Nepo choosing – as expected – a very solid variation for white. After a balanced game, the two players drew by repetition and Nepo won the tournament with a round to spare!

Round 13 of the ended with Nepomniachtchi drawing against Rapport to win the tournament with a round to spare! Also, Nakamura beat Duda to be the sole second.

⚡ Round 9 of the Tournament ended with 3 decisive games and Nepomniachtchi resting assured at the top with a 1-point lead after his draw against Caruana!

The most anticipated game was Caruana-Nepomniachtchi. No surprise, Nepo went for the super-solid Petroff, an opening where both players are huge specialists. Caruana introduced us to a novelty which – as it showed – it proved him right to gain an early advantage. Nepo, however, managed to equalize and the game ended in a predictable draw!

Round 8 of the Tournament ended with Nakamura and Rapport winning against Caruana and Duda respectively.

❤️ One of the most fascinating games of the Candidates 2022 was Nakamuraa-Caruana. The clash of the Americans started with the Open Spanish, Dilworth Variation with the players yet to stop to think after 20 moves! Nakamura seemed very creative in his style which brought Caruana in trouble.

Hikaru’s depth of understanding of this position was clearly showing, and after an absolutely incredible performance from Nakamura, the game ended in his favor.

⚡ After today's results, Nepomniachtchi is now a full point ahead with 6/8.

Vladimir Kramnik, a Russian chess Grandmaster who defeated Garry Kasparov to gain his first world champion title.

Round 6 of the Tournament ended with Nepomniachtchi and Caruana winning against Duda and Firouzja respectively.

After today’s results Nepomniachtchi is the sole leader 🏆 of the tournament with 4.5/6 and high chances of being the next Challenger for the second time.

5 of the Tournament ended with Hikaru Nakamura and Ding Liren missing an opportunity to win against Nepomniachtchi and Radjabov respectively. After today's results, Nepo keeps the lead with 3.5/5.

Paul Charles Morphy was an American chess player. He is considered to have been the greatest chess master of his era and is often considered the unofficial World Chess Champion.

Round 4 of the 2022 Candidates Tournament ended with Ian Nepomniachtchi winning against Alireza Firouzja.

It was the only decisive game of the day, the rest ended in a draw.

The world #3 became a GM at the age of 14 and is the youngest player ever to cross the 2800 barrier.

He is currently playing in the in Madrid, having qualified by virtue of his win in the 2021 .

Alexandra was the Women's World Champion from 2008 to 2010. She is the reigning Women's World Rapid Champion too - one of her many successes in 2021; winning the Women's World Cup was another.

Her illustrious career includes gold medals at Olympiads (2010, 2012, 2014), World Team Championships (2017, 2021) and European Team Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017), and a European Women's Champion title (2004).
