The following gold-ground panel was composed by Niccolò di Pietro (Venice, 1394-Venice, 1427), painted with tempera and gold on wood panel (105×39.5 cm). The painting shows us an image of the celebrated Early Christian Bishop of Hippo. The artwork is striking for its vivid chromatic qualities, especially noteworthy in the cloak's brilliant red lining, the book's orange cover held in the saint's left hand, and the rust-colored platform on which he stands.

This beautiful painting is by Pietro Dandini, titled “Allegory of Temperance” 🌟

“This painting represents a young female figure emerging from a neutral and seemingly undefined background, pouring water from a gilded jug into an ornate bowl of wine set on a table. The action carried out by the woman enables us to recognize this as an allegory of Temperance. Following the most traditional iconography relating to this allegory, the scene depicted here symbolizes the human quality of temperance: in order to remain sober and not risk losing one’s reason, one should mix water with wine before drinking (Bellesi, 1991). “
