Taunggyi Balloon Festival (Fire Balloon Festival) is annually celebrated in November in Taunggyi which marks the end of rainy season and is also known as the Tazaungdaing Festival of Lights.
Balloon competitions are held throughout the day and night. Day balloons are usually in the form of pagodas and animals such as elephants, dragons, ducks or birds. At night, balloons are usually in the shape of a rugby ball, huge elongated paper balls with hundreds of small lighted multicoloured paper lanterns hung around their sides. The night balloons would string along fireworks and fire sticks which are set off a incredible display in the sky.
In addition, there are also many musicians who play and dance traditional Shan music and the festival lasts until dawn.
