Our Story

In 2011 the civil war between the central government and the Kachin Independence Army has started again. Due to the fighting more than 100,000 villagers had to leave their houses and became so called “Internally Displaced People’’. It has been more than seven years they are living in camps far away from their homes. The ones who suffer most are the children who have no access to any form of education.

Candle Library Foundation started since 2012 when the intensified conflicts are happening. Our vision is to give the displace people (especially children and youth) a chance to continue their learning, and geting access to education despite of the civil war around them with no formal education opportunities. We build mobile libraries in IDPs camps and train the local community how to run by themselves. In addition we do several activities like knowledge dialogues, competitions, special talks, English classrooms and volunteer programs in order to give non-formal education to the people. Once when the war is over and when people are allowed to return to their villages, we are going to help them to take the libraries with them and build a brighter future through knowledge and education.
