A house doesn't need to be too big to become a home. All it needs are the warmth of hearts and the happiness of the family.

This house, built around year 2000, was redesigned in 2021 and renovation completed in 2023, to suit with its new owner family's requirements. It was a worn out two storey house with a low-ceiling mezzanine floor at the top and needs a bit of love to be appreciated for its value.

We have made both subtle and significant changes which have made a huge impact to the overall functionality and aesthetics.

Exterior

When we designed the outdoor space, the requirement was to accommodate 4 cars while leaving some space for a low-maintenance-green space for outdoor sitting area which is communicated with the main building with the roofed-walking path. The fence design was also altered to resonate with the main building removing the complex pattern and iron grills. This not only gives the more special, modernized vibe but also gives privacy and security.

Since it is a west-facing house, we tried to block the direct sunlight by having a brick fence and growing a tree in front of ground floor windows, removing some unnecessary windows in the first floor, putting small wooden strips in the remaining windows to protect the direct sunlight and reduce the excessive heat.

Interior

Extracted from the original design of doors, windows and layout plan, we have based our design theme on curves. Since the clients has asked for simplicity, we went for simple lines and minimalistic concept and white color injected by some bouts of yellow, light orange colors to give not only a spacious vibe but also a joyful and warm atmosphere.

All the necessary furniture and appliances are organized in the limited space without a feeling that it is over-stuffed. The bedroom furniture layouts are rearranged and themes are customized according to the requirement of each family member.

A part of existing mezzanine stair was removed, relocated and replaced by a curved stair and a bridge-like passage way with a fanlight window transporting indirect light from the west sun resulting in a cozy sunshine. The stair, which becomes a heart of our design, not only acts as a functional component but also act as an art, highlighted by the natural skylight from top floor to ground floor.

A year ago … a young Chinese couple contacted us to design for a room where they were going to live after their marriage …

Client : Hi Ma Su San… Could you pls design our room with a deep deep green colour??
And… we like antique style interior with wooden furnitures…
