As you hopefully know next Saturday (26th) the British Association of Trade & Commerce in Mongolia (BATCM) will be hosting The Royal Gala at the Shangri-La hotel. Make sure you get your ticket before they're gone!

This week has also seen the start of the football World Cup in Qatar and a strong showing so far from European sides including Wales and England.

The Shangri-La have offered use of the private area off the Naadam Bar this Friday evening to host Steppe Inne guests as well as providing drinks from a private bar within the area and a special Steppe Inne menu. They will put a large screen TV in the area so people who wish to can watch the early game, Wales Vs Iran. Later England will be victorious over the USA, albeit with a 3am kick off!

Sentiment towards blowing up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder and burning effigies on bonfires has largely subsided in the UK these days, as Guy Fawkes Night/Gunpowder Treason Day passes our calendars this weekend more serenely. Afterall the combustibles are needed to keep everyone warm this winter instead.

Friday 21st October represents 217 years since the Battle of Trafalgar and 110 years since Mongolia and Russia signed a treaty to expel Chinese troops from Mongolian territory. This has no particular relevance whatsoever but may yet add another joyous morsel to a Friday night Steppe Inne conversation. The Steppe Inne will be held as usual this evening at the Cosy Club, from 6pm.

At 6.30pm, we will hold a small toast to the Queen, to commemorate her memory.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away yesterday, 8th September 2022. She had been Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries from the age of 26 and her reign lasted 70 years. She is succeeded by her son, King Charles III.

Glastonbury Festival kicks off this week in the UK and is magically transported into the Cosy Club where live-stream and classic sets will line up alongside local live music for a funk filled Friday night. Best of all, you won't need your wellies.

Kicking off at 6pm with the Libertines then raising the bar from there, to complete the festival programme a BBQ will be stoking on the balcony and plenty of drinks from the bar.

Platinum is (thusfar!) one of the few materials that Mongolia doesn't seem to have in abundance. Fortunately this Friday the UK can step in with our own version to say congratulations to HM Queen Elizabeth II, as she celebrates 70 years on the throne with her Platinum Jubilee.

Another Steppe Out this week; as today (20th May) is the 98th anniversary of the passing of the Bogd Khan we will be heading in the direction of his namesake mountain to pay our respects with a dram and hopefully some enlightening encounters.

So come enjoy a Steppe Inne in Zaisan with an evening at Highland Park Mongolia today. See you there from 6pm.

Directions
If coming by bus from the city. The bus is labelled Zaisan. It can be boarded from the stop on Chinggis Avenue next to KFC among other places. I would recommend disembarking at Irish Castle stop in Zaisan and getting a taxi from there. Taxis wait at the stop. From there follow taxi directions.

Taxi - head to the bus terminus about 200 metres south of Royal County. Then turn left at terminus and head east for 2-300 metres until the road brings you left again and you will see highland Park up the hill on the right.

The Steppe welcomed friends from the UK Alumni last week who put on a fantastic quiz and raised funds for the Children's Book Project. Thanks also to Tengis & his team for the limitless cheese.

Gavin Watt, Vice Consul at the British embassy in Ulaanbaatar, departs this week after 3 years in post. We send him best wishes and thanks for all the help, support and patience with the Sassenachs. We daresay we might see him back at some point!

The Grand National runs in the UK this weekend, as an early warm up to Naadam when the serious horse racing can begin. One of the favourites this year is "Snow Leopardess", giving a healthy Mongolian link to the whole proceedings.

Although the Steppe Inne will be gathering near parliament this Guy Fawkes night, we remain optimistic no gunpowder will be involved. It also coincides rather nicely with Chinggis Khan's birthday in 2021 so to celebrate this, the Steppe Inne will offer a free beer to anyone who joins in traditional Mongolian clothing this week.

So you are very welcome at Le Bistro Francais for some merry mayhem beginning at 6pm.

At the heart of the Steppe Inne is our fundraising and support of local NGOs and good causes. Last Friday we ran our second successful fundraiser of the season with our generous members and guests contributing over 700,000mnt to support development of the Mongolian Cricket Seed Appeal girls team. Thank you to everyone who joined the evening and dug deep. We are proud to continue supporting local causes during this new era of the Steppe Inne.

The Steppe Inne, will be open on Friday 22nd October at the Bistro Francais from 6pm.

Some of you may be familiar with the great work Tulga and the team at Cricket Mongolia have been doing over the last few years. This year they were awarded Associate Membership of the ICC which is a fantastic achievement. This week the Steppe will host Tulga and his colleagues and raise some funds to support their winter indoor sessions. Please bring a generous spirit and a full wallet!
