Wuhan Lingshan Cliff Edge Cafe

A sandwich of layers, the building emerges as a conglomeration of strata: a lightweight steel structured canopy on top, with walkways towards the other moutain top, followed by a cafe cantilevered outwards seeking to reconnect with the mountainous landscape.

"INTERIOR MATERIALITY"

The experience unfolds through a delicate dance between architectural precision and refined ambiance, achieving a harmonious blend of structure and softness; a narrative conveyed through textures, materials, and an intimate connection with the interior setting. Earthy tones of brown, terracotta, and cream evoke a feeling of serenity and comfort as guests step into the rooms. Distinctive materials like dark-tinted brushed oak for the coffered wall panels and locally sourced ceramic tiles for the walls contribute to the architectural elements.

【 JOURNAL #007 - Adaptive Reuse 】

Adaptive reuse has become a sustainable strategy, helping us reduce carbon footprints and move towards achieving zero-carbon goals.

Once a residential building in the 90s, the hotel is a reimagined hotel designed to organically build community and to inspire creative collaboration and activism. EIA+RISAA takes inspiration from the evocative nostalgia of 1950s and 60s Hong Kong, and in large the Greater Bay Area such as shopfronts, and textures.

The reimagined building is an energetic tapestry of colour and pattern layered with a strong sense of industry and activity. It’s also a neighbourhood in transition. A complex program including a rooftop bar, restaurant all round out this eclectic hotel offering.

Damu (大畝)

During the Qin and Han Dynasties, agriculture in China saw rapid growth, leading to the "intensive cultivation and meticulous farming" approach. This laid the foundation for China’s traditional agricultural structure. The architecture, inspired by damu area units, is designed with multiple sections resembling "farmland," each around 461 square meters in size. This design highlights the evolution of modern agricultural development.

【 JOURNAL #006 - Biodiversty by Design】

RISAA is interested in creative solutions to the big issues that face all of us – how to build sustainably; how to deliver innovative and sustainable design solutions to combat the challenges of climate change, and biodiversity loss. A carefully considered project in sensitive ecological zone calls for a thorough investigation of the existing ecosystem. RISAA base our work on the research efforts of biodiversity research teams whom conduct study of regional biological species, composition, distribution, habitat conditions, community characteristics, and threatening factors. Recently the research team has completed study on local terrestrial plants, terrestrial vertebrates, and insects found at site. As of now, surveys for 8 vegetation plots and 4 animal transects for the site have been completed.

The building's design prominently showcases bold lines and dynamic curves that give it a visually arresting and unique appearance. The fluid lines and curves mimic the shapes found in the local topography, ensuring the building feels like a natural extension of the environment. The cantilevered observation deck extends beyond the cliff, providing visitors with unobstructed panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

【 JOURNAL #006 - RISAA to experiment with AI in Design 】

AI drawing programs have broadened the scope of designers’ capabilities by giving them unlimited creative expression. Thanks to the remarkable capability of GPT3-based "diffusion models" to generate images. With new AI tools, machines can take on tasks, like planning a car park, that enable designers to spend more time exploring ideas that make a real social impact.

With help from fellow researchers based in the UK, RISAA is to become amongst the first in Macao to experiment with AI assisted design in an upcoming project.

【 JOURNAL #005 - Boat House】

The boat house restaurant plays with architectural contrasts to propose a resilient microcosm within the rural context. The project spotlights the underbelly of the great structure, in the shape of a massive, upside-down ship, which forms a cavernous roof over the interior spaces. The building facade’s spectrum of blue tones breaks up its surroundings, recalling vibrant ocean waters and reinforcing the project’s connection to maritime architecture.

Inspired by the history of the place, both the original greenery inside a former mineral mine and the water are important sources of inspiration. With the restoration of nature, the site is reintegrating into the surrounding landscape.

The pool has been carefully planned to be a perfect gathering spot for all seasons: the water level will rise and fall in response to the rainy and dry seasons, and in hot weather mist sprayers will reduce the local temperature to provide welcome relief to visitors. This space hosts playgrounds, gathering spaces, and a stage for performances, while the artful artefacts has left a number of follies that can in due course be converted to shops, kiosks, and other amenities.

【 JOURNAL #004 - Eco Sensitivity 】

RISAA is honoured to be able to start work on the master plan for two new projects. One is located within a designated ecological protection zone and the other, inside a protected National Wetlands Park.

These projects represent the firm’s continuing commitment to sustainable design and sensible interventions that are informed by climatic and societal conditions. Our aim is two-fold: it must be multi-functional and it must express ecological sensitivity. In other words, it should provide a range of ecosystem services, demonstrate sensitivity towards natural cycles (e.g., the water cycle) and complex relationships (e.g., food webs), and honour the principles of regenerative design.

A Modular Cabin of Design Finesse Heralds the Future of Outdoor Hospitality

The outdoor hospitality industry is evolving in response to the impact of COVID-19 on tourism, with leisure travel expected to return to pre-pandemic levels this year. However, the industry is not returning to its previous state. To adapt, a modular cabin system has been developed that caters to the popular trend of glamping and outdoor retreats. These cabins have been specifically designed for use in a national park and are characterized by their functional, adaptable, and sustainable design, as well as their streamlined aesthetic. Additionally, each cabin comes equipped with an onsen hot tub, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in nature and enjoy a relaxing experience.
